Minimum quantity lubrication – [MQL]

1.Applications of small amount

of fluids delivered in a
compressed air and directing
them at chip tool contact area
is called minimum quantity
lubrication (MQL).
2. Today MQL systems have
been established in many
industrial sawing and milling
processes
Why MQL?

In conventional flood cooling mist particles are formed which are

dangerous to operator health and environment.
These methods increase production cost.
In today’s competitive scenario it is essential to adopt new and
innovative machining methods to improve productivity in
manufacturing and provide environmentally clean manufacturing for a
long run.
MQL is new approach for cooling in machining. This approach is
environment friendly, production cost reducing

Lubrication
Types Of MQL
•Internal Minimum Quantity Lubrication

An aerosol is generated in the MQL equipment's reservoir and fed through

the rotating spindle or turret to to the tool. With an optimal setting the
metered quantity of oil is completely used up without any residue being left.
•External Minimum Quantity Lubrication
Metered lubricant is atomized by compressed air in a spray
nozzle. That produces micro droplets that make their way
together with the carrier air to the friction point without
any mist being formed.
Advantages of MQL
•They are environmental friendly.
•Many advantages are realized through the use of MQL and the
reduction of cutting oil consumption.
•Improvement of the plant environment; reduction of electricity
consumption, increased tool life, a “greener” environment, and a
decrease of machine maintenance due to contamination by
coolant.
•MQL generally uses vegetable oil or ester oil as the cutting fluid.
These high-performing oils have excellent lubrication and natural
dissolving properties.
Disadvantages of MQL
1. MQL does not take heat out of the tool, the work piece or the
whole machining system; it will reduce only the amount of heat
produced by the chip moving up the face of the tool
2. It will not move chips from the cutting zone.
3. The nozzle must be located not more than 1 to 2 inches from
the tool as it enters the cutting zone, so more often than not, the
applicator nozzle must be adjusted for each different tool.

4.After the tool enters the work piece no additional fluid can
reach the tool work piece interface
.
NEW APPROACHES TO COOLING
1.COOLANT
2.MQL
CONCLUSION
It can be seen from the literature that there are new methods developed by researchers to
reduce or eliminate pollution occurred in machining. It was found that minimum
quantity lubrication is effective for cooling in machining. This is environment friendly,
while using this method cutting forces are reduced considerably, surface finish is also
improved, and is economically. Manufacturers should consider these results to improve
performance in machining
