Smart Managers for Intelligent Networks

> ASON/GMPLS networks are trickier than plain-vanilla SDH

> NE and Control Plane
‡ Execute daily chores in the network (provisioning)
‡ React to faults following defined recovery policies
‡ Detect and notify changes in the network environment
> Management
‡ Defines and adapts overall network policies (e.g. protection)
‡ Tracks network and link usage by GMPLS-controlled paths
‡ Simplifies maintenance tasks (traffic reroute, link removal/insertion
in service for planned works)

Resource Discovery and Network View

> RM can discover the existing network avoiding any operator

activities via J0 set/discovery
> Discovery can be based:
‡ On the installed fibres (no previous J0 set on network by any
external source, full automated provisioning via RM)
‡ On the planned fibres (J0 already set by an external agent, be it a
human CT operator or a GMPLS control engine)
> 1354RM can provide a unified view where all the transport
network technologies (SDH, WDM, GMPLS and proprietary
restoration) are seen and managed together

Path management

> Same cross-technology management approach of network

topology
> When the path crosses the ASON, its implementation and
protection is requested to the ingress GMRE. This results in a
Soft Permanent Connection (SNC or LSP)
> When the path crosses the traditional SDH network, cross-
connections, squelching tables and traffic maps are
automatically provisioned by RM
> All thanks to the Shared NE concept

Details on the ASON

> Through RM is possible to retrieve all the details of the different

GMRE¶s belonging to the ASON e.g.:
‡ The list of GMREs (control planes) with their status
‡ The list of Soft Permanent Connections (SPC/SNCs)
‡ SPC status: backup not found, backup lost, ready to revert, pre-
empted etc
‡ The list of TE-links with their related SRGs
‡ The list of Switched connections with details related to their history

Fault Management

> RM provides monitoring of paths and of Soft Permanent

Connections.
> RM is also receiving all alarms coming from NE not under
control of GMRE and hence be able to detect the root cause of
an alarm
> The end points of the SPC¶s are automatically monitored to
detect faults

Maintenance

> From RM is possible to retrieve the status of the paths

supported by a given physical connection.
> When the ASON is involved details are requested to the GMRE
> In the traditional SDH network RM performs all the calculations
considering the SNCP positions etc..
> RM can also ask the GMRE to lock the usage of a physical
connection for protection and/or moving one-by-one the
existing LSP¶s (SNC¶s)
> The actuator is no longer the NMS as in NP case but the
distributed control plane
> NMS retains responsibility for triggering and supervision
