 Recently as of March 2011, they have increased
their efforts to protect citizens in the Ivory
oast from tension over the election scandal.
 One of the most regrettable moments in UN
history with Africa was how they handled the
Rwandan Genocide.

times between 1962 and 1995 to protect French
nationals.
 Their actions during the Rwandan genocide
debatable.
 Some say that they saved thousands of lives
and helped to stabilize the region while others
say they only looked out for French nationals
and important Rwandan nationals.
 Recently the French has had up to 3,000 troops
in the Ivory oast to defend the buffer zone
between the Northern and Southern regions.
 Most of France·s interest in Africa comes from
it being a supplier of oil and metals.
 It also comes from it being a neighboring
continent so conflict there will always affect the
French and the rest of Europe in some way.
 Much of the US·s history in Africa has dealt
mainly with humanitarian aid.
 During the Rwandan genocide the United
States refused to truly fight for Rwandan peace.
 They mostly were there to evacuate U.S.
citizens, as has been the case for most of their
involvement in Africa.
 The lack of helped stemmed from the U.S.
refusing to call the violence in Rwanda a
genocide.
