Just as having poor health can affect our

teeth, so can poor teeth affect our
health

This is why it is important to monitor

what͛s going on in our children͛s
mouths, before we visit the dentist

÷o we can͛t depend on dentists to educate

us on the best way to take care of our
teeth.

Children's teeth are also known as primary teeth. There are only 20
teeth in total. In comparison there are 32 teeth in an adult's mouth.
Children are not born with teeth. Teeth usually begin to erupt from
6 months of age and finish around 24 months of age.

Primary teeth are important for several

reasons. Foremost, good teeth allow a
child to eat and maintain good nutrition.

Healthy teeth allow for clear pronunciation

and speech habits. The self-image that
healthy teeth give a child is
immeasurable. Primary teeth also guide
eruption of the permanent teeth.

@ Tooth decay, known technically as dental
caries, is one of the most common health
complaints in the world.
@ It is particularly common in children and
young adults, and rates have been fuelled
by an increase in sugars in the diet, and
poor dental hygiene.
@ Each time a child drinks liquids containing
sugar, acids attack the teeth for about 20
minutes. When awake, saliva carries away
the liquid. During sleep, the saliva flow
significantly decreases and liquids pool
around the child͛s teeth for long periods,
covering the teeth in acids.

@ m brown area is the first sign of tooth decay.
÷ometimes a white area appears. This is
discernible to a dentist only. mt times a shadow
or an area of lesser density is visible in an x-ray
image. The decay in the first stage can be
quickly halted or reversed.

  è
@ The tooth is infected by the bacteria. The
bacteria penetrate the enamel to form a cavity
The process takes place in about 3-4 years. mt
this stage the tooth is unable to repair itself.
The mineral cells and living cells in dentin are
exposed to the bacteria. Your tooth becomes
sensitive to hot, cold or sweet food and may be
associated with mild pain also.

The cavity boundaries extend with the bacteria entering the

pulp tissue and causing infection called pulpitis. The
infected pulp tissue swells. The harder dentin surrounding
it prevents it from expanding. The swollen tissue ultimately
squeezes the blood vessels. This cuts off the blood supply
to the pulp resulting in its death. You will experience
extreme pain at this stage.

 - following each feeding, wipe your baby's gums with a
clean soft cloth. Begin brushing your child's teeth as soon as the
first tooth erupts. You can begin flossing once all the baby teeth
have erupted by around 2-3 years old. Most dentists recommend
to clean your teeth at least twice a day. Using a toothpaste with
fluoride is a good idea as this provides the teeth with added
protection from the effects of acid.
@
- Never allow your child to fall asleep with a bottle
containing milk, formula, fruit juice or sweetened liqued.

night, or during naps, ensure it is cleaned under hot water.
Never give a child a dummy dipped in any sweet liquid.

the bacteria congregate in areas inaccessible to brushes and
