(1.) INTRODUCTION
Prof. Kawabata of Japan has carried
out a great deal of work with the aim
of replacing the subjective
assessment of fabrics by experts with
an objective machine based system
which will give consistent and
reproducible results.
(2.) KAWABATA EVALUATION SYSTEM
F0R FABRIC (KES-F)
KES-F is generally agreed that the
stimuli leading to the psychological
response of fabric handle are entirely
determined by the physical &
mechanical properties of fabrics.
(A)Subjective assessment of fabric
handle.
(B) Objective evaluation of fabric
handle.
(A)SUBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT OF FABRIC
HANDLE

The first part of Kawabata’s work to

find agreement among experts on
what aspect of handle were
important and how each aspect
contributed to the overall rating of
the fabric
Contents
(B) OBJECTIVE EVALUATION OF
FABRIC HANDLE
The second stage of Kawabata’s work
was to produce a set of instruments with
which to measure the appropriate fabric
properties and then to correlate these
measurements with the subjective
assessment of handle .The aim was that
the system would then enable any
operator to measure reproducible the
total hand value of a fabric.
KES-F EQUIPMENTS
KES -FB1 : TENSILE AND SHEARING

KES-FB2 : BENDING

KES-FB3 : COMPRESSION

KES-FB4 : SURFACE FRICTION AND

VARIATION
SHEAR:
Shear properties are measure of inter –yarn friction
force, the represent the stability of fabric to
withstand in
plane mechanical distortion. It measured to a
maximum shear angle of ± 8º.
TENSILE:
A constant tensile force I is applied to the fabric is
one direction and the amount of stretch is
measured. This is
deformation is called” Strip Biaxial Deformation. The
deformation rate is kept constant at 0.2mm/sec.
KES-FB2 INSTRUMENT
BENDING :
In this test a fabric sample is bent first one
way and then in the opposite
direction, as indicated in Figure. The
instrument applies a linearly
increasing bend curvature (which is the
reciprocal of the bend radius) to a
sample of fabric, whilst at the same time
monitoring the bending moment
developed.
KES -FB4 INSTRUMENT

Surface characteristic :
An assessment of the "roughness" of
a fabric's surface is effectively made
by dragging a U-shaped wire across
it, as illustrated schematically
