6/34
Reception Reception
Your mind takes in information through your five
senses. The first step to remembering information
is to receive or understand it. Relating
information to something familiar can increase
your understanding of the material. You cannot
retain information that you dont understand.
7/34
Tips to improving your reception
Pay attention: Stay alert . Focus on what you
are learning.
Engage as many senses as possible when receiving
information. Take notes (tactile senses). Look
and (visual senses) Listen the environment
(auditory senses).
Ask questions. You must understand the
information to receive it.
8/34
Retention
Retention is the ability of the
mind to take in and store
information.
9/34
Tips to improving your Retention:
(During Training)
Be an active reader. Make notes while you are
reading.
Review, Review, Review. The more you review the
information that you hope to learn, the longer it will
stay in your memory.
Recite, Recite, Recite. The more you repeat the
information, the longer you will be able to remember
the material. Use note cards and study guides.
Practice, Practice, Practice. Do your practice; it
helps you internalize the information.
Motivate yourself to remember.
Ask yourself how will this information or lack of it
impact future goals? etc.
10/34
Recall
Recall is the ability to select from that
vast store of information we need at a
given time.
11/34
Tips for improving recall
Organize information. Put similar items together in
categories that make sense to you.
Use your preferred learning style
Visual learners -- make charts, maps and/or
diagrams (visualize these while studying and taking
test)
Auditory learner-- try reciting the information
aloud. (Let a friend quiz you orally).
Kinetic learner-- try writing the information.
(Quiz yourself and write the answers down).
Create your own practice . Try to anticipate
questions.

remember something. Create a rhyme to help you remember
a concept with multiple parts.
Use acronyms

Choose a key word that will help you remember each step.
Then, using the letter of each key word, create your acronym.

Association is the process of connecting new
information that you want to remember to something
you already know.

About memory by Carl Seashore
The average man does not use above ten percent
of his actual inherited capacity for memory. He
wastes the ninety percent by violating the Natural
Laws of Remembering.
