INTRODUCTION
1. Goa lies between 14 - 16o North latitude and 73-75o longitudes on the west coast in India 2. Climate is warm and humid tropical with cool and pleasant weather in winter months 3. Average annual rainfall is 2800 mm. The total rainfall received during the year 2005-06 was 3345 mm 4. The highest and lowest temperatures are 35o C and 18o C 5. Relative humidity varies from 100% to 51%

1. Pressure for conversion of land for other uses due to high land cost 2. Lack of super High yielding varieties 3. Imbalance and limited use of fertilizers 4. Fragmented and small, uneconomic land holdings 5. Low level of interest in agriculture and tendency of keeping lands fallow 6. High wages and unavailability of labour in time
