HISTORY OF NED UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY, KARACHI

 The NED University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi was established in March 1977 under the act of Provincial Assembly of Sindh on upgradation of the former NED Government Engineering College, Karachi. From the Karachi. historical point of view, therefore, the university is fairly young. young. However, The NED Government Engineering College which originally formed the nucleus of the University structure was set up in 1922 and is the oldest engineering institution in Pakistan. Starting with an Pakistan. enrolment of 50 students in Civil Engineering more than seven decades ago, the student population in the main campus today has gone up to around 6000 at undergraduate and postgraduate level. level.

 This institution was initially founded as the Prince of Wales Engineering College with the donations of the citizens of Karachi to commemorate the visit made by the Prince of Wales to the city in 1921. The College was renamed as the 1921. NED Engineering College in 1924 in memory of Mr. Mr. Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw, a well-known philanthropist, wellwhose heirs made substantial donations for the development of the College on his first death anniversary. anniversary.  After the creation of Pakistan, the Government of the Province of Sindh took over the management of the college on October 17, 1947 and renamed it as the NED 17, Government Engineering College, Karachi.  The NED University of Engineering and technology is the oldest institution now in Pakistan for teaching and turning out Graduate Engineers; it is in the Public Sector i.e. Engineers; Government owned having begun initially as an Engineering College in 1922 established by subscriptions from private donors. Like other such Government owned institutions in developing countries, it has had over the years to overcome various handicaps ranging from shortage of funds to brain drain of Faculty Members as well as students. Nevertheless, because of its transparent students. admission policy which has established its reputation over the years, it attracts the best students including even some foreigners lacking resources for seeking admission in Universities of developed countries!

NED SWOT ANALYSIS

First University which adopt ISO 9000.  Introduce New Technology.  Introduce many websites & Digital Library.  Introduce video conferencing.

     

Weaknesses: Universities have Low Cost of education. Management is not stable. Decline in practical equipment. Less emphasis in latest Technology equipment. Low research papers.
