LEADERS ARE EVERYWHERE

Leaders are Everywhere

Leadership comes from integrity - that you do whatever you ask others to do. There are nonobvious ways to lead. Just by providing a good example as a parent, a friend, a neighbor makes it possible for other people to see better ways to do things. Leadership does not need to be a dramatic, fist in the air and trumpets blaring, activity. Scott Berkun You dont need a title to lead. Adorna O. Carroll

Leading
Remember that it is far better to follow well than to lead indifferently. John G. Vance The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. Max DePree Uncertainty will always be part of the taking charge process. Harold Geneen You can use all the quantitative data you can get, but you still have to distrust it and use your own intelligence and judgment. Alvin Toffler If you have to think out of the box, youre already in a box. Leaders understand that there is no box. Adorna O. Carroll

Leading
"Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world." -Anonymous If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun. Katharine Hepburn Only one man in a thousand is a leader of men the other 999 follow women. Groucho Marx Hell, there are no rules here--we're trying to accomplish something. - Thomas A. Edison You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing you think you cannot do. Eleanor Roosevelt The trouble is, if you don't risk anything, you risk even more. Erica Jong

WHO CAN BE A LEADER?

Who can be a leader?

Leaders aren't born they are made. Vince Lombardi Some leaders are born women! Unknown It's amazing how many cares disappear when you decide not to be something, but to be someone. Coco Chanel Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely. Karen Kaiser Clark You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing that we call 'failure' is not the falling down, but the staying down. Mary Pickford The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor. Vince Lombardi

WHAT IS LEADERSHIP?

What is Leadership?
Leadership should be born out of the understanding of the needs of those who would be affected by it. Marian Anderson Leadership is lifting a person's vision to higher sights, the raising of a person's performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations. Peter F. Drucker The art of leadership is saying no, not yes. It is very easy to say yes. Tony Blair Leadership is about courage, not about popularity. Adorna O. Carroll

QUALITIES OF LEADERS

Qualities of Leaders
A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don't necessarily want to go, but ought to be. Rosalynn Carter "All of the great leaders have had one characteristic in common: it was the willingness to confront unequivocally the major anxiety of their people in their time. This, and not much else, is the essence of leadership. John Kenneth Galbraith "Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers, who can cut through argument, debate, and doubt to offer a solution everybody can understand. General Colin Powell

Leadership in Organizations
If one is lucky, a solitary fantasy can totally transform one million realities. Maya Angelou Every organization must be prepared to abandon everything it does to survive in the future. Peter F. Drucker In organizations, real power and energy is generated through relationships. The patterns of relationships and the capacities to form them are more important than tasks, functions, roles, and positions. Margaret Wheatly

Organization run amuck

A great many people think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices. William James When what you are doing isn't working, you tend to do more of the same and with greater intensity Dr. Bill Maynard & Tom Champoux Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power. Abraham Lincoln A badge and a title do not necessarily identify a leader but will certainly identify those that arent. Adorna O. Carroll

LEADERS VERSUS MANAGERS

Leaders versus Managers

Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things. Peter F. Drucker The manager asks how and when; the leader asks what and why. Warren Bennis Lead and inspire people. Don't try to manage and manipulate people. Inventories can be managed but people must be lead. Ross Perot Managers cope with change. Leaders cause it and make the competition change. John Kolter "Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success; leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall. Stephen R. Covey Managers enable Leaders empower. Adorna O. Carroll

LEADERS BUILD GREAT TEAMS

Leaders Build Great Teams

Don't tell people how to do things, tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results. George Patton Most of what we call management consists of making it difficult for people to get their jobs done. Peter Drucker The quality of leadership, more than any other single factor, determines the success or failure of an organization. Fred Fiedler & Martin Chemers "Leadership is the ability to establish standards and manage a creative climate where people are selfmotivated toward the mastery of long term constructive goals, in a participatory environment of mutual respect, compatible with personal values. Mike Vance

Leaders Build Great Teams

Never hire or promote in your own image. It is foolish to replicate your strength and idiotic to replicate your weakness. It is essential to employ, trust, and reward those whose perspective, ability, and judgment are radically different from yours. It is also rare, for it requires uncommon humility, tolerance, and wisdom. Dee W. Hock "The task of leadership is not to put greatness into people, but to elicit it, for the greatness is there already. John Buchan You need to identify the right people to do the right job at the right time and then get out of their way. Adorna O. Carroll

TRAINING FUTURE LEADERS

Training Future Leaders

I start with the premise that the function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers. Ralph Nader "Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others. Jack Welch Great leaders identify others to replace themselves. Adorna O. Carroll
