To

be familiar with POR & IPL process Practical experience of POR & IPL of OS/390 throughout the course.

I/O Definitions (IODF) Device definitions are necessary for two reasons Only defined devices are know to the Channel subsystem Only defined devices are know to the OS IODF are made using HCD IODF are stored in IODF datasets IODF datasets are used during IPL to define the devices to OS, by creating UCB (Unit Control Blocks) IODF is converted into IOCDS (I/O control datasets) for use during POR.

Loading a copy of the operating system from disk into the CPU` s central storage SYSRES volume Single CPU is used IPL steps 1. Bootstrap (Cycl 0, Track 0) 2. IRIM (IPL Resource Initialization Module) 3. NIP (Nucleus Initialization Program) 4. MSI (Mater Scheduler Initialization) 5. JES

Load

Address SYSRES volume containing nucleus and parms Load Parameter ccuu xxya

ccuu IODF volume xxLoadxx subscript y Message suppression/prompt a Alternate nucleus

The

Hardware configuration definition is loaded from IOCDS into the HSA (Hardware System Area) HSA is a non-Software addressable piece of CS, used for

a microcode work LPAR Processing & I/O configuration data.

Step

Send a Console message to all the users. SE Z900 system will be coming down in another 5 min, Pls logoff Send an Lotus mail to all the users.
Step

Enter a command to restrict the users logging on to system F TSO,USERMAX=1

To complete the IPL process go to the HMC (Hardware Management Console). The hardware management console provides a single point of control to manage your central Processor Complex Select the Primary Support Element Double click the GROUPS in VIEW area. Click the defined CPCs in WORK area.

Click the IMAGES in WORK area Select the LPAR which you want to do an IPL. Double click the LOAD option in Right pane area. Verify the previous LOAD address & LOAD parameter. Enter the LOAD address & LOAD parameter & click the yes option.

This is the end of IPL Process.

There

are Two main steps involved in POR of a S/390 i.e. POWER ON & POWER OFF, which is entirely different from ordinary PC. Steps involved in bringing down or rather POR ing the S/390 & later systems(Z/900)

Power

off procedure includes three steps

IPL (From step 1 to 20) IPL of all LPARs Deactivation of LPARs Finally Power off the ESS & Z900.

Repeat Step 1 to 20 for all LPARs available. Deactivation of LPARs

Select the primary Support Element in HMC Double click the GROUPS in VIEW area. Click the Defined CPCs in WORK area Click the IMAGES in WORK area. Select the LAPARs one by one in WORK area & Click the DEACTIVATE option in TASK area. Double click the GROUPS in VIEW area. Select Defined CPCs in VIEW area & DEACTIVATE the same. Press CNTL + DEL SHUTDOWN the HMC

Power

off the ESS

Press the Local power switch in ESS front panel & wait for 3 to 5 min. The line cord LEDs will be off when the system power has completed. If the Line cord LEDs do not go off, call the concerned.
Power

off the Z900

Switch off the RED color switch in the front panel of Z900.

Power

On procedure includes 6 steps

Switch on UPS Switch on ESS Power on Z900 Activating the LPARs IPL the LPARs Specifying System parameter

Power

on the Z900

Switch on the RED color switch in the front panel of Z900 & wait for 5-10min. Power on the HMC Enter the USERID & PASSWORD Double click the HMC1on desktop. Double click the GROUPS in VIEW area. Double click the Defined CPCs.

Select the P0010D63 in the WORK area & double click the ACTIVATE option in the TASK area. Once the P0010D63 is activated go to the TASK area click the CUSTOMIZE PROFILE ACTIVATION. Select the Profile, which is to be used & assign the profile with save.

3 types of Profiles exists.

LOAD IMAGE RESET

The Load profile defines parameters for the processing unit, load device address, and associated parameters. The Reset profile defines the IOCDS, the parameters to power-up and power-on reset, and also identifies the Load or Image profiles that will be used. The Image profile defines parameters to control the activation of logical partitions.

After selecting the Profile go to the TASK area click the POWER ON RESET option. Now it will ask for frame select the frame & give yes. After the POWER ON RESET completion. Double click the GROUPS in VIEW area. Double click the images on WORK area & activate all the LPARs one by one. IPL all the LPARs one by one.

Specify

System Parameter

Double click the IMAGES in WORK area and select the any one of the LPAR. Double click the OPERATING SYSTEM MESSAGES in TASK area. This will ask for system parameters Enter R 00 Then JES will come up before which we need to specify the JES2 parameters( whether Cold/warm start.) Repeat the above steps for each LPAR.
