CAUSAL RESEARCH

Casual research design investigates the cause and effect relationship between two or more variable. This design measures the extent of relationship between the variable. impact of one variable on the other.

Causal research is useful to show the For example price and market demand

relationship or relationship between market competition and sales 4/8/12 performance.

Conti
Positive and Negative impact of

advertising on sales can be studied through causal research.

The relationship between the causal

factors can be studied through causal research.

The variable which create effect on

other variable can be studied in depth through causal research.

THE DESIGNS FOR CAUSAL RESEARCH CAN BE DIVIDED INTO 3 CATEGORIES.

HISTORICAL FIELD SURVEY EXPERIMENTAL

HISTORICAL
Historical causal research is the study of past events and questions using methods in sociology and other social scientific research to inform the possible outcomes and answer to current events and questions.

FIELD SURVEY
In this method data/information are obtained from a general study of a large number of respondent by specific questions. The response may be collected :
Face to face Telephone survey Mail survey

EXPERIMENTAL
In this there is controlled manipulation of one or more independent variables so that its effect on one or more dependent variables are measured. The most common of these design in marketing research and experimental economics are test market and purchase labs. The techinques are commonly used in other social sciences including sociology, psychology and social works.

TRUE EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN

True experimental design is regarded as the most accurate form of experimental research, in that it tries to prove or disprove a hypothesis mathematically, with statistical analysis. Participants are given money, script or money to purchase in a simulated store. 4/8/12

QUASI EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN

It control some but not all of the extraneous factors. A test market is an example of this. A new product is typically introduced in a select number of cities. These cities must be representative of the overall national or international population. The marketer has controlled over marketing mix variables but almost no controll over the broader business 4/8/12 environment variables.

ADVANTAGES OF QUASI RESEARCH

It is used when randomization is

impossible.
By utilizing this it minimizes

threats to external validity as natural environment do not suffer artificiality as compared to well known laboratory test.
Quasi experiments are natural

DISADVANTAGES OF QUASI RESEARCH

It poses many challenges for the

investigators in terms of internal constrains.

The control allowed through the

manipulation of the quasi independent variable can lead to unnatural circumstances.
