Factors Influencing Perception

JOHARI WINDOW

JOHARI WINDOW
A Johari window is a cognitive psychological

tool, used to help people better understand their interpersonal communication and relationships. Public quadrant This quadrant represents traits of the participant of which both they and their peers are aware. Hidden quadrant representing information about the participant of which their peers are unaware but you ar aware

JOHARI WINDOW
Blind quadrant. These represent information of

which the participant is not aware, but others are, and they can decide whether and how to inform the individual about these "blind spots". Unknown quadrant, representing the participant's behaviors or motives which were not recognized by anyone participating. This may be because they do not apply, or because there is collective ignorance of the existence of said trait.

Errors and Biases in Attributions

Fundamental Attribute Error : The fundamental

attribution error is most visible when people explain the behavior of others. It does not explain interpretations of one's own behaviorwhere situational factors are often taken into consideration. Self serving bias : The self-serving bias can be seen in the common human tendency to take credit for success but to deny responsibility for failure

Shortcuts in Judging Others

Selective Perception: People selectively interpret

what they see on the basis of their interests, background, experience, and attitudes Halo Effect: Drawing a general impression about an individual on the basis of a single characteristic Contrast Effects: Evaluation of a persons characteristics that are affected by comparisons with other people recently encountered who rank higher or lower on the same characteristics

Shortcuts in Judging Others

Stereotyping: Judging someone on the basis of

ones perception of the group to which that person belongs. projection bias is a psychological defense mechanism where a person unconsciously denies their own attributes, thoughts, and emotions, which are then ascribed to the outside world, such as to the weather, a tool, or to other people.
