Noun
A noun names a person, place, thing, or
idea.
There are 6 types of nouns: common,
proper, concrete, abstract, compound,
collective.
Examples:
common: boy proper: Ashley
concrete: desk abstract: freedom
compound: ice cream collective: team
Pronouns

• Pronoun- a word used in place


of a noun or another pronoun

Reflexive and Intensive
Pronouns
• A reflexive pronoun reflects action
back upon the subject and adds
information to the sentence.
Ex.Donna prepared herself for a long
day.
• An intensive pronoun adds
emphasis to a noun or pronoun in
the same sentence; not needed
• Ex. The wait itself would take
hours.
Demonstrative Pronouns
• Demonstrative
pronouns point out
specific persons,
places, things, or
ideas.

Indefinite Pronouns
• Indefinite pronouns do not refer to a
specific person, place, or thing.
Examples: another, anybody, each,
everybody, neither, nobody, somebody,
someone, both, few, many, several, all, any,
more, most, some, none
Ex. Everybody is doing well
Interrogative pronouns
• Interrogative
pronouns are
used to ask a
question

• Relative Pronouns
are used to
introduce
subordinate or
dependent clauses.
Who, whom, whose,

Ex. He is the boy who
was on the
bleachers.
Verbs
• Verbs are words that express time while
showing and action, a condition, or the
fact that something exists.
Types of verbs
Action verbs tell what action someone or
something is performing. Ex. Lightning
struck the tree.
Linking verbs connect a noun or pronoun at
or near the beginning of a sentence with
a word at or near the end. Ex. Doris is the
winner. He was glad.
Helping Verbs can be added to another
verb to make a verb phrase. Ex. They will
Adjectives
• Adjectives are words that describes a noun
or pronoun. It answers what kind? Which
one? How many? How much? About the
noun or pronoun.
• Examples: green lights, silver jewelry, third
chance, several people, little time.

• Tip: The articles a, an, the are always


considered adjectives.
Adverbs
• Adverbs are words
that modifies a verb,
adjectives, or another
adverb.
• It answers where?
When? In what
matter? To what
extent
• Examples: went there,
arrived today, danced
awkwardly, wash
completely.
Preposition
• Prepositions are words that relates the noun or
pronoun following it to another word in the
sentence. The noun is called the object of the
preposition.
• Tip: A proposition is anywhere and airplane can
go regarding a cloud.
• Example: The airplane can fly toward the cloud,
under the cloud, above the cloud, beneath the
cloud, in front of the cloud.
Conjunctions
• Conjunctions are words used to connect
other words or groups of words.
Types of Conjunctions
• Coordinating- used to connect similar kinds
or groups of words. Ex. And, but, for, nor,
or, so , yet
• Correlative- connect similar words or
groups of words but the come in pairs.
Ex. Both…and, either..or, neither…nor,
not only…but also, whether…or
Interjection
• Interjections
are words that
express
feelings or
emotion.
Example: Ouch!
Wow! Ah!
