Testing Ethernet Services

Carrier Ethernet: Definition, Benefits and Attributes What is the MEF Carrier Ethernet Certification Program? What does the Certification of Service Provider Carrier Ethernet Services Mean? Why is Service Quality the Next Big Step in Carrier Ethernet Compliance Testing? Where is the MEF Certification Program Going in 2007-2008?

MEF 9: A Test Specification for Services

MEF 9 is an innovative service-oriented test specification Defines tests that can be applied to Ethernet Services defined by the MEF:
E-Line Services E-LAN Services

MEF 9 opens the way for future service-oriented test specifications based on MEF services specifications

MEF 9 Tests Service Compliance from the Subscriber Point of View

MEF 9 tests conformance of Ethernet Services at the UNI where the Subscriber and Service Provider areas of responsibility meet

MEF 9 Services Certification Tests

MEF Phase1 Certification Tests are based on MEF 9: Abstract Test Suite for Ethernet Services at the UNI Certification Tests are defined for the three Ethernet Services defined in MEF 6: EPL Services EVPL Services E-LAN Services

Testing Ethernet Services Attributes

MEF 9 defines a series of tests to verify that Services delivered to the Subscriber across the UNI are conformant to MEF technical specifications Specifically MEF 9 tests two sets of the MEF defined Attributes of Ethernet Services: the EVC Attributes the UNI Attributes

- An Ethernet Virtual Connection (EVC) is an association of 2 or more UNIs

- MEF has defined 2 EVC types - Point-to-Point (E-LINE) - Multipoint-to-Multipoint (E-LAN)

MEF 9 Certification Test Cases

Certification of compliance to MEF 9 is based on the Iometrix MEF 9 Test Plan which has a total of 244 Test Cases:
For EPL Services:
48 Test Cases of which 33 are mandatory

For EVPL Services:

95 Test Cases of which 63 are mandatory

For E-LAN Services:

101 Test Cases of which 67 are mandatory

11

MEF Certification Update

12

MEF 9 Certification for Service Provider Carrier Ethernet Services

Guarantee that subscribers can confidently order Ethernet EPL, EVPL and E-LAN services that conform to MEF service specifications Essential for large enterprises receiving Ethernet services from multiple providers

Make Ethernet services more attractive to enterprise subscribers with strict requirements for service quality

13

Service Provider Certification Process

Carrier Ethernet Services Certification testing carried out by Iometrix in two step process:
Lab test phase
Service Provider required to build out service infrastructure in a lab environment for initial verification of service compliance to MEF 9 specifications

Field test phase

MEF 9 compliance for each Service is tested end-to-end on Service Provider production circuits built across Service Provider core network

14

First Group of Services Providers Awarded MEF 11 Compliance Certification

15

Service Quality: The Next Step in Carrier Ethernet Compliance Testing

Traffic Management Testing based on MEF 10: Section 6.7 which defines EVC Related Performance Service Attributes:
Frame Delay Service Performance Frame Delay Variation Service Performance Frame Loss Ratio Service Performance

Section 7.10 which defines Bandwidth Profiles Service Attributes:

Bandwidth Profile Rate Enforcement Bandwidth Profile per Ingress UNI Bandwidth Profile per EVC Bandwidth Profile per Class of Service Multiple Bandwidth Profiles at the UNI

16

MEF 14 Introduces Standards Based SLS/SLA Verification of Carrier Ethernet Service Quality

SLS (Service Level Specification) refers to the parameters of the performance objectives SLA (Service Level Agreement) refers to the contractual obligations binding the Subscriber and the Service Provider Based on Traffic Management specifications in MEF 10 Ethernet Service Performance Attributes Frame Delay Service Performance Frame Delay Variation Service Performance Frame Loss Ratio Service Performance

Measured per EVC and per Class of Service

Requires continuous, accurate, accountable measurements on operational networks

17

MEF 14 for Service Providers

Worlds First Service Quality Certification Program

Significance
Integral to Carrier Ethernet goals and attributes First standardized QoS certification for Service Providers on any technology or service

Implements Test Cases Defined in MEF 14

Provides the standard to measure and enforce premium Carrier Ethernet Services Makes Carrier Ethernet directly competitive with premium legacy services Provide the standard to enforce Carrier Ethernet that delivers residential triple play data/voice/video services.

18

New Service Provider Certification to MEF 14

Service Performance
Frame Delay Service Performance
Interactive voice, video and many data applications

Frame Delay Variation Service Performance

Critical for VoIP, non-buffered video and time sensitive data applications

Frame Loss Ratio Service Performance

Critical for voice, video quality and most data applications
