Autism: A Different World

Definition

"Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. (Autism Society of America)

ASD

Autism and Aspergers disorder are in fact subgroups of a larger diagnostic category. This larger category is called either Autistic Spectrum Disorders, mostly in European countries, or Pervasive Developmental Disorders ("PDD"), in the United States . Asperger's Disorder is a milder variant of Autistic Disorder Jon Forbes (A beautiful mind)

Autistic Child

Symptoms

No fear of danger. Over or under sensitivity to pain. May avoid eye contact with you. May prefer to be by him/herself. Has difficulty expressing what they want or need - may then try to use gestures. May echo words or phrases. (Echolalia)

Symptoms

May have inappropriate attachments to objects. May spin his/herself or objects. Prolonged repetitive play. May insist on things/routines always being the same. May exhibit self injurious behavior when upset i.e. biting selves or banging heads. An overall difficulty interacting with others.

Spontaneous genetic mutation Toxic exposure Allergy? Immunity deficiency? Idiopathic

Behaviour modification
Those with autism often miss the subtle cues that typically prompt children towards proper social behavior. Where an exasperated look from a parent or teacher can be enough to cause many children to correct their behavior, children with autism are likely to need a more direct approach. To change an undesirable behavior to a desirable one.

Children with ASD of any kind. Based on the principle that influencing a response associated with a particular behaviour may cause that behaviour to be shaped and controlled. ABA is a mixture of psychological and educational techniques that are tailored to the needs of each individual child to alter their behaviours. ABA involves the use of behavioural methods to measure behaviour, teach functional skills, and evaluate progress. Is to increase skills in language, play and socialization
