Abraham

Our Father in
Faith
Abraham
• Is our Father in Faith.
• God’s Covenant with him was to
bless all nations through him.
(Land and descendents)
• He is recognized as a spiritual
father by Christians, Jews, and
Muslims.
God calls Abram (not yet
Abraham)
• From Ur (modern day Iraq) .
• To an unknown land.
• When he was 72.
• He was probably well off in Ur.
• He made a giant leap of faith.
Three fold blessing
• Descendents as numerous as
the stars or the grains of sand
on the beach.
• A great name.
• A world wide blessing.

Canaan… here we come!
• Abram and Sarai arrive and find
a famine.
• They then go to Egypt where
Abram displays his tendency
toward weakness and sin.
• He convinces the Egyptians that
his wife is his sister and she is
taken into the harem.
• This causes plagues for the
Egyptians who figure out the
deception…
• And send Abram and Sarai
away.
• They go back to the promised
land and Lot insists that there
isn’t enough room for Abram.
Abram lets lot keep the land (It
turns out to be Sodom and
Gomorrah.)
• How will the promise be
fulfilled.
War.
• Five kings vs. four kings. The
victors took Sodom, Gomorrah,
all the booty…and Lot.
• Abram had to rescue the ingrate
nephew.
• He dominated the rival kings
and took Lot back.
• Then…a mysterious exchange.
Melchizedek
• King of Salem (The king of
righteousness)
• Salem?…
• Ooooh!…Salem?…
• Rrrr???…oooooh!!!…Salem?.
• JJJJ…rrrrr….ooooo….Salem.
• JERUSALEM!
Melchizedek
• Is a king…
• But he offers sacrifice…
• So he is a….
• Priest….
• But also a king.
• Okay.
Bread and Wine
• He offers a bread and wine
sacrifice.
• (So far…lambs…now bread and
wine)
• He BLESSES Abraham.
• Where did he get a blessing?
• Well since Melchizedek is a
sort of time…we have to ask.
What’s his real…
SHEM?!?!?!
• He is either Shem or a descendent of
Shem.
• He carries Noah’s blessing to
Abraham.
• He stands as a type of Christ…the
Great High Priest.
• He is both king and priest…like
Christ.
• He prefigures the whole Davidic line.
• He only shows up for a few lines.
• But he is one Big dawg!
More Prefiguring
• Take a look at Genesis 18.
• Who are these strangers?
• These 3 strangers?
• Who do they represent?
• How does Abraham deal with
them.
The promise
• Abraham is not getting any
younger.
• He is still childless.
• So he and Sarah have an idea.
• A bad idea.
Abraham has a child
named Ishmael
• With Hagar, his wife’s
maid servant.
• That won’t cause any
tension or drama!
Abraham then has another
son
• The right way…with his
wife.
• Sarah laughs when God
tells her.
• This seems impossible.
• But here comes Isaac.
More drama

• Sarah grows terribly

resentful of Hagar and
Ishmael.
• God sends them away to
avoid a brawl, but
promises to make a great
nation of Ishmael.
But then…

•God makes a pretty

tough request of
Abraham.
•Tune in next time to
find out what that’s
all about.
