APA Formatting
Font: 12 point Times New Roman (11 pt Arial in our industry)
Title: Center and use Title Case (capitalize words 4 letters or longer)

Capitalization, Quotes, Italics, Underlining


In titles, also capitalize short words that are verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs: Writing New Media, There Is Nothing Left to Lose In your Reference list, only the first word of a title will be capitalized: Writing new media When capitalizing titles, capitalize both words in a hyphenated compound word: Natural-Born Cyborgs Capitalize the first word after a dash or colon Italicize or underline the titles of longer works such as books, edited collections, movies, television series, documentaries, or albums Put quotation marks around the titles of shorter works such as journal articles , articles from edited collections, tv episodes, and song titles

In-text Citations for Short Quotations (less than 40 words)

In-text Citations for Long Quotations (more than 40 words)


Use block indenting: tab from the left margin Double space the entire quotation Do not enclose it in quotation marks Note: the period is placed BEFORE the in-text citation

Example of a Long Quotation


This is an example of a long quotation. You want to make sure that you are properly citing it in-text and in your reference page. The APA guidebook reminds us that: The quotation is considered long if it is more than 40 words. Also, you are to use block indenting which means you tab from the left margin. In addition, the quote should be double spaced and dont forget that you do not enclose it in quotation marks. (APA Guidebook, 2011, p. 46) That is what your long quotation should look like. Remember that you should try to avoid long quotations whenever possible to ensure that you are using enough of your own ideas and to preserve word count.

In-text Citations, Multiple Authors

Cite both authors surnames joined by a & The zombie apocalypse is upon us (Rob & White, 2011).

Cite all authors surnames in the 1st reference; for subsequent references include only the surname of the first author followed by et al. and the year. By 2020, we may all be zombies (Cobain, Corogan & Reznor, 2011). It is a fact that we are doomed (Cobain et al., 2011).

Other Publications
Dictionary/Encyclopedia Definition
If the entry has no author, use a shortened version of the title of the entry from the dictionary or encyclopedia in place of the authors name Zombie is defined as the body of a dead person given the semblance of life (zombie, 2011, para. 1).

Personal Communication
Includes interviews, lectures, telephone conversations, letters and memos Give the initials as well as the surname of the communicator Do not include personal communications in your Reference list unless retrieved from an online source As one zombie expert explained: Brains are the most sought after snack for zombies (A. Reference List Capitalization

If an author is not provided, then use the name of the website excluding the www. and the .com Only include the year in the date If no title is provided, skip this information ALWAYS include the date retrieved. If you visited the site more than once, use the most recent date ALWAYS include the URL. It is easiest to copy and paste it into your references OneNote is a fantastic tool to keep track of websites and their URLs
