GLOBAL WARMING

What Is GLOBAL WARMING.?

Global warming is the continuing rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans. Global warming is caused by increased concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, resulting from human activities such as deforestation and burning of fossil fuels

What Causes GLOBAL WARMING?

NATURAL CAUSES

MANMADE CAUSES

NATURAL CAUSES
Greenhouse Gases
The greenhouse effect is the process by which absorption and emission of infrared radiation by gases in the atmosphere warm a planet's lower atmosphere and surface. The major greenhouse gases are water vapor, which causes about 3670 percent of the greenhouse effect; carbon dioxide (CO2), which causes 926 percent; methane (CH4), which causes 49 percent; and ozone(O3), which causes 37 percent.

Forest Fires
The fires cause much carbon-filled smoke to rise from the forests to the atmosphere. Both results have dramatic effects on the rate at which global warming is currently occurring. Forest fires started by man, whether intentionally or not, pose even greater dangers to the atmosphere.

MANMADE CAUSES

Deforestation

The effect of deforestation on global warming is global warming itself and the acceleration of it because of the fact that the effects of deforestation are compounded by the fact that forests are being permanently replaced by buildings and pavement that add to the warming.

Industries
In the developing world, many development projects have come under criticism for damaging the environment, even when they are presented as helping it. Concerns have increased in line with the rising investment in the developing world. In the late 1990s attention was drawn to a United Nations project to get corporate collaboration/sponsorship in development projects, supporting human rights and the environment, and being generally more responsible and accountable. PAPER INDUSTRY is the biggest industry harming the environment

Facts About
GLOBAL WARMING
Average temperatures have climbed 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 degree Celsius) around the world since 1880, much of this in recent decades, according to NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies. The rate of warming is increasing. The 20th century's last two decades were the hottest in 400 years and possibly the warmest for several millennia, according to a number of climate studies.

Glaciers and mountain snows are rapidly meltingfor example, Montana's Glacier National Park now has only 27 glaciers, versus 150 in 1910.

Industrialization, deforestation, and pollution have greatly increased atmospheric concentrations of water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, all greenhouse gases that help trap heat near Earth's surface.

Future Expectations
Sea level could rise between 7 and 23 inches (18 to 59 centimeters) by century's end, the IPCC's February 2007 report projects. Rises of just 4 inches (10 centimeters) could flood many South Seas islands and swamp large parts of Southeast Asia.

Some hundred million people live within 3 feet (1 meter) of mean sea level, and much of the world's population is concentrated in vulnerable coastal cities. In the U.S., Louisiana and Florida are especially at risk.

Glaciers around the world could melt, causing sea levels to rise while creating water shortages in regions dependent on runoff for fresh water.

Rising temperatures could release additional greenhouse gases by unlocking methane in permafrost and undersea deposits, freeing carbon trapped in sea ice, and causing increased evaporation of water.

Disturbing Facts

Steps to Save The Planet

Reduce To buy less and use less. Incorporates common sense ideas like turning off the lights, rain barrels, and taking shorter showers etc.

Reuse Elements of the discarded item are used again. Initiatives include hand-me-downs, garage sales and composting. Includes the terms laundry, repair, and up-cycle

Recycle Discards are separated into materials that may be incorporated into new products. This is different from Reuse in that energy is used to change the physical properties of the material.

Generate Capturing useful material for waste to energy programs. Includes Methane Collection, Gasification and Digestion, and the term Recover.

Incinerate High temperature destruction of material. Differs from Gasification in that oxygen is used; differs from burning in that high temperatures consume material efficiently and emissions are controlled.

Dumping To discard into the natural environment, or to "trash" the planet. Includes Litter, Burn Barrels, Unnecessary Vehicle Idling, and Dumping discards onto land or into water.

INDIAs CONTRIBUTION TO CURB GLOBAL WARMING

India being the second most populated country and 7th largest in the world has contributed a major percentage to eliminate 'Global Warming' and hence can contribute a lot towards its control as the situation has got out of control presently. It is high time now that Indian government is required to give grave concern to curb global warming.

Individual Awareness in India About Global Warming :

General awareness advertisements is given on televisions and transmitters about how we can reduce the rising global warming in India as well as in the world. The idea is that the information should reach the masses because global warming is not a concept that can be done away with money or any super power; instead it requires each and every individual's awareness.

Implementation of Tall and Filtered Chimneys of Factories :

India has thousands of factories adding bulk of smoke in the air every day. Though the govt. has set some standards to these factories but we hardly see factories abiding these rules. Indian govt. needs to be stricter as far as factories are concerned. Tall and filtered chimneys should be used by the factories for the smoke outlet.

Lessen Deforestation and Increase Afforestation in India : Trees can be regarded as the medicine to reduce the growing global warming. Indian govt. should completely ban the setting up of buildings and other infrastructures in the regions which require mass axing of trees. It is the trees which absorb all the harmful content of the air and make it pure.

What YOU Can Do At HOME

1. Plant a tree :
A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. Shade provided by trees can also reduce your air conditioning bill by 10 to 15%. The Arbor Day Foundation has information on planting and provides trees you can plant with membership.

2. Buy fresh foods instead of frozen :

Frozen food uses 10 times more energy to produce.

3. Start a carpool with your coworkers or classmates :

Sharing a ride with someone just 2 days a week will reduce your carbon dioxide emissions by 1,590 pounds a year.

4. Choose energy efficient appliances when making new purchases : Look for the Energy Star label on new appliances to choose the most energy efficient products available.

5. Be sure youre recycling at home :

You can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide a year by recycling half of the waste your household generates.

6.Replace Plastic by Jute Bags :

Plastic as we all know is such a material that takes millions of years to get decomposed completely. Though cheap but harmful and a major contributor in global warming. Plastic bags should be completely banned in India; instead jute bags should be circulated in the market.
