APPLICATIONS OF NANOTECHNOLOGY

INTRODUCTION TO NANOTECHNOLOGY IN DRUG DELIVERING SYSTEM

Nanotechnology received a lot of attention with the never-seen-before enthusiasm because of its future potential that can literally revolutionize each field in which it is being exploited. In drug delivery, nanotechnology is just beginning to make an impact. Many of the current NANO drug delivery systems, however, are remnants of conventional drug delivery systems that happen to be in the nanometer range, such as liposomes, polymeric micelles, nanoparticles, dendrimers, and nanocrystals. Liposomes and polymer micelles were first prepared in 1960s, and nanoparticles and dendrimers in 1970s.. The importance of nanotechnology in drug delivery is in the concept and ability to manipulate molecules and supramolecular structures for producing devices with programmed functions. To appreciate the true meaning of nanotechnology in drug delivery, it may be beneficial to classify drug delivery systems based on the time period representing before and after the nanotechnology revolution.

Nanoparticles can be separated into several different classes: Nanoclusters ,which are defined as semi crystalline nanostructures with at least one dimension between 1-10 nm and narrow size distribution. Nanopowder is an agglomeration of noncrystalline nanostructural subunits with at least one dimension less than 100nm. Nanocrystals are nanomaterials with at least one dimension less than 100nm. Nanocrystals are single crystalline. The other types are nanorods, nanocups, nanospheres, nanodiamonds and nanostars. As shown in figure a,b,c,d.

ADVANTAGES
There are six types of drug delivery system in which NANOTECHNOLOGY is most effectively used. It is easier to administer. It is more pleasant for the patient receive and confer a competitive advantage in the marketplace . Nanotechnology is also opening up new opportunities in implantable delivery systems, which are often preferable to the use of injectable drugs.

DISADVANTAGES

Prevention of drug from biological degradation Effective Targeting Patient Compliance Cost effectiveness Product life extension

SOME SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENTS OF NANO DEVICES

Development of one dose a day ciprofloxacin using nanotechnology Tumor targeted taxol delivery using nanoparticles in Phase 2 clinical trial stage Improved ophthalmic delivery formulation using smart hydrogel nanoparticles Oral insulin formulation using nanoparticles carriers. Liposomal based Amphotericin B formulation

CONCLUSION
It appears that nano drug delivery systems hold great potential to overcome some of the barriers to efficient targeting of cells and molecules in inflammation and cancer. There also is an exciting possibility to overcome problems of drug resistance in target cells and to facilitating movement of drugs across barriers such as those in the brain. In Future Nanotechnology revolutionize the medical field.
