What is communication ?
Communication is an art whose aim is the systematic exchange of information. Derived from the Greek word communicare or communico which means to share. Community implies a group of people living in one place. Languages are the codes of communications.

Help Management to know problem and Grievances of their staff Encourages an effective and proper feedback. Helps to create confidence among the subordinates. Helps to satisfy employees ego. Helps to find out the extraordinary skills present in junior staff members. Helps to Improve Productivity.

Disadvantage of Upward Communication
Subordinates are afraid of their Superiors. Subordinates communicates only achievements and pleasant matters to their Superiors Subordinates try to act over smart by communicating some matters to top authority leaving their immediate seniors behind. Strikes and lockouts which ultimately result in losses to the organization.

Advantages of Downward Communication Keeps subordinates well informed about information. It raises the moral of subordinates. It gives proper motivation to subordinates. It educates subordinates.

Disadvantage of Downward Communication Under Communication Transmitting or sending or communicating a message either in brief manner or in truncated manner. Over Communication Transmitting or sending or communicating a message in more than required way.

Is a Two-way channel of communication. It is a combination of upward and downward communication. Instructions are given by management to the staff through downward communication. Suggestions or reports are received by the management from the staff through upward communication.

Vertical channel encourages better co-operation and co-ordination between the staff and management. The channel helps proper, smooth and democratic functioning of the business organization. Channel assures proper feedback. Helps management to implement their policies and plans effectively. Is the best channel of communication available in todays world.

Is a communication which takes place between persons of equal Status, rank or position. E.g.: Communication between two managers, two workers and two clerks in business organization.

Advantages of Horizontal Communication It increases efficiency of business organization. It encourages co-operation and co-ordination. It encourages an immediate feedback. It increases co-ordination between different departments. It saves time.

Disadvantages of Horizontal Communication If there is rivalry among two executives of same status then this channel of communication might create many problems. If one executive is jealous with other then this channel will not work. If there is too much Horizontal communication then it will affect Vertical communication.

Consensus means total agreement of opinion. It means approval received by taking the other party into confidence. This type is popular in politics. E.g.: The leader of political party is generally elected by consensus. This type of communication is very useful in solving the problems like wage-scales, Bonus etc.
