Why involve young people?

Young people are mothers too For women in the developing world between the ages of 18-25, complication in pregnancy and birth is the leading cause of death. Change-agents. Young people have the potential to be a driving force in creating change but they need the right opportunity and support. Their energy, flexibility and fresh perspective are valuable assets and by empowering, educating and incorporating youth, we can utilize vast untapped potential. Sustainability. Today's young people are the leaders of the future and the progress and sustainability of our current development efforts relies heavily on their enthusiasm and involvement. How can young people contribute to the WRA? There are many ways in which young people can contribute to objectives and efforts of the WRA. We must see young people as key actors, not just beneficiaries. Our aim is to provide the encouragement, direction and support

Youth Interview Questions

Intro: We hope that this will serve two purposes 1) To get a specific understanding of the issues facing young people, in their specific region or country. We then hope to use these stories for our website and the global advocacy campaign. 2) To get an idea of what specific activities young people have already been involved in, to find what specific activities people would like to get involved in, and to find out what we can do to support this. We hope that in speaking with young people in each alliance we will be able to gather and share information across the alliances. I. Awareness Are you familiar with the WRA? If so, have you been involved with any WRA activities? Please describe. What opportunities are available for young people to get involved? If not, are you aware of the rates of maternal mortality in your country/community? How widespread is the recognition that women die in pregnancy and childbirth? Are the deaths widely publicized? Are you familiar with the term Safe Motherhood? II. Your Community Why are young mothers dying in your community? How do young women learn about sex/pregnancy/childbirth? Is this something they talk about with their peers/mothers/teachers? Who do they look to to learn about family planning or prenatal care? What are the most common forms of contraception available to young people? How do you obtain contraception? Who is in control of it? What about young men? What role do young men play in supporting young mothers in your community? III. Opportunities How can the WRA support and involve young mothers and young men? What are some activities that young people would be most keen to get involved with? IV. Messaging What are the best places and ways to reach out to young people? What messages about safe motherhood resonate best with young people? How would you talk about the WRA to your friends? What other issues do young people campaign around? What messages

Early recommendations for youth involvement

Peer to peer education- an extremely valuable strategy in spreading information and opening dialogue among young people.

Organizational Support- seek the assistance of young people. Just as you all volunteer your time and energy.
University Connections: Universities and higher education institutions can be tremendous resources. Technological Support: For many young people, the Internet is their second home. Special Events and Awareness Campaigns: Young people have proven to be a valuable resource in raising the profile of the WRA through various events and activities, by utilizing sports, music, art and dance / We would like to collect more examples of current WRA supported youth activities. If you have been working with young people in your community please let us know and fill in the sheet attached to this paper. In each quarterly newsletter, we will contribute an article featuring WRA youth activities
