    1) Saint-Nazaire began as a small village but grew into a major port city starting in the mid-19th century with the development of shipbuilding and docks. 2) The city was heavily damaged during World War 2, with the Nazis occupying the city from 1940-1945 and using it as a submarine base. It was the last city in Europe liberated. 3) After the war, the city underwent massive reconstruction efforts and a strategy to reconnect with the sea and harbor through new developments, renovations of waterfront areas, and cultural/entertainment attractions.
