Recap

In the last class we have studied about

• Monostable multivibrator using 555 timer IC

AEI505.64 to 65 2
Objectives:

Upon the completion of this topic the student will

be able to learn about

• Bistable multivibrator using 555 timer IC .

Circuit operation:

• It is a pulse generating circuit in which The duration

of the pulse is determined by the RC network
connected externally to the 555 timer.

• Initially when the output is low that is the circuit is In

a stable state , the transistor Q1 is on and the
capacitor C is shorted out to ground.

AEI505.64 to 65 5
• Upon application of –ve trigger pulse to the Pin 2
,transistor Q1 is turned off which releases

• The short circuit across the external capacitor C

and drives the output high.

• The capacitor c now starts charging up towards

Vcc through Ra

AEI505.64 to 65 6
• The time during which the output remains high is
given by tp=1.1RaC seconds.
where Ra in ohms and C in farads.

• It is also referred as bistable latch or Flip-flop.

• Schmitt trigger is another bistable circuit.

AEI-505.64-65.
AEI505.64 to 65 7
• The out put of the flip-flop turns the transistor Q1 on
,and hence the capacitor C rapidly discharges through
the transistor.

• The output of the monostable remains low until a

trigger pulse is again applied .then the cycle repeats.

• The pulse width of the trigger input must be smaller

then the expected pulse width of the output waveform.

AEI505.64 to 65 8
• The trigger pulse must be a –ve going input
signal with an amplitude larger then 1/3Vcc

AEI-505.64-65.
AEI505.64 to 65 9
• One important property of a bistable circuit is that it
maintains a given output voltage level unless an
external Signal (trigger) is applied.

• Application of an appropriate external Signal causes a

change of state and this output level is maintained
Indefinitely until a second trigger is applied.

• Thus a bistable multivibrator requires two external

triggers before it returns to its initial state.
