Health and Safety form a integral part of an

environment. Health is a general part of well being . It not only include physical wellbeing but also mental and emotional wellbeing. Safety refers to the act of protecting the physical well being of an employee. It includes the risk of accidents caused due to machinery, fire or diseases.

Responsibility of Manager

Monitor health and safety of employees. Coach employees to be safety conscious. Investigate accidents. Communicate about safety policy to employees

Responsibilities of supervisors

Provide technical training regarding prevention

of accidents. Coordinate health and safety programs. Train employees on handling facilities an equipments. Develop safety reporting systems. Maintaining safe working conditions.

Reasons for Occupational health and safety

The event of an incident at work such as legal

fees, fines, compensatory damages, investigation time Lost production, lost goodwill from the workforce, from customers and from the wider community. Legal - Occupational requirements may be reinforced in civil law and/or criminal law;

INTRODUCTION
The Factories Act, 1948 came into force on

the 1st of April,1949 .

The Factories Act was amended in 1949,

1950, 1954, 1956, 1976 and 1989.

This law was applicable to only those

factories, which employed 50 or more workers.

OBJECTIVE
To provide safety measures and to

promote health and welfare of workers. occupational hazards.

To protect workers against industrial and

For that purpose, it seeks to impose upon

the owners or the occupiers certain obligations.

APPLICABILITY
It is Applicable to: whole of India. All Factories including Government

Factories.

Factories using power and employing 10 or

more workers and 20 without using power.

OTHER PROVISIONS
Working Hours, Spread Over & Overtime of Adults Weekly hours not more than 48. Daily hours, not more than 9 hours.

Intervals for rest at least hour on working for 5

hours.
Spread over not more than 10 hours. Overlapping shifts prohibited. Restrictions on employment of women before 6AM

and beyond 7 PM.

Employment of Young Person


Prohibition of employment of young children

e.g. 14 years.
Non-adult workers to carry tokens e.g. certificate

of fitnekss.
Working hours for children not more than 4

hrs. and not permitted to work during night shift

Annual Leave with wages

A worker having worked for 240 days @ one day for every 20 days and for a child one day for working of 15 days. Accumulation of leave for 30 days.

Not to engage in improper behavior that will

endanger themselves or others.


Not to be under the influence of drink or

drugs in the workplace.


To report any defects in the place of work or

equipment that might be a danger to health and safety.

WE HAVE LEARNT
Labor welfare facilities are those which result in

improving the conditions under which workers are employed and work. These include not only the health but also welfare measures adopted for the benefit of the workers. The Factories Act, 1948 has provided for certain health and welfare measures for workers working in factories in India.
