your calendar and plan to be in New Orleans for
our first full-scale Forum. We look forward to
meeting with you in October and welcome your
voice in our conversation where we will:
• Welcome national and international visitors to
Louisiana from around the globe to discuss best
practices for growing cultural industries as key
segments of a global economy.
• Build cultural economic development
opportunities through the strategic convening
of cultural ambassadors and leaders from
around the world.

Forum
• Position Louisiana as the driving force of the global cultural
economy movement by positioning the state to become the
World Economic Forum of culture, hosting a spectrum of
international participation through three components
including:

– Two-day forum in New Orleans Oct. 30-31 for world cultural


economy leaders from approximately 60 countries to discuss
best practices for growing cultural industries
– A World Bazaar and Marketplace showcasing artisans and
vendors from around the world in the Ernest N. Morial
Convention Center Oct. 31 - Nov. 1
– October Passport Events across the state showcasing all of
Louisiana's unique cultural assets including more than 100
events in 26 parishes across the state
• The WCEF will provide the opportunity to explore best
practices and engage in critical conversations for improving

I. World Cultural Economic Forum:
 
• During the one-day Executive Session of the 2007 WCEF,
numerous ideas were generated and the
• conversation of cultural economy was elevated to global
importance. In 2008, WCEF will expand the
• Executive Session into a three-day event to explore even further
the true potential of the economic
• and social value of an economy fueled by culture.
 
WCEF, Day 1: “Cultural Convenings”

• Cultural Convenings will host organizational meetings and


sessions with interests that relate to the cultural economy.

WCEF, Day 2: “Toward a World Cultural Compact“
October 30, 2008
 
Toward a World Cultural Compact will feature experts from
three issue areas of the cultural economy: education,
cultural economic development, and cooperation and
understanding.

Throughout the day, breakout sessions are planned where


experts will discuss these areas and agree on principles and
language to be adopted in a world compact. Concluding the
day, chairs from each breakout session will gather to share
these findings to be developed into a World Cultural
Compact, a tool that can be used to steer cultural economic
development agendas worldwide. At the 2009 WCEF, a
State of the Cultural Economy discussion will track the
progress made following the recommendations from the
World Cultural Economic
Forum
• Welcome Address – Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu will set the stage for the WCEF
and greet visitors with an introduction to the Louisiana Cultural Economy
Initiative.
• The Dialogue of Culture Address – This high-level keynote address will
conceptualize the scope of the global cultural economy and lay the groundwork
for an annual compact.
• Education Breakout Session – This expert panel will focus on the importance of
keeping arts and creativity in education to cultivate imagination in children and
foster the growth of future participants in the cultural economy.
• International Youth Breakout Session on Arts, Creativity, and Cultural Life – This
panel will bring together young people from across the globe to share their
perspectives on culture.
• Cultural Economic Development Breakout Session – This group will explore
issues of sustaining authentic culture, while enhancing production capacity and
markets for artistic and cultural products.
• Cooperation and Understanding Breakout Session – This group will discuss
culture as a key to international understanding in an environment where
cultural borders are constantly being redefined in an era of globalization.
• Toward a World Cultural Compact General Session – Chairs from each of the
breakout sessions will gather and present their respective panel’s consensus to
be developed into a World Cultural Compact.

WCEF, Day 3: Developing Cultural Economies

• Developing Cultural Economies will feature innovative breakout
sessions and keynote addresses from leaders in a variety of fields:
• Best Practices in Cultural Economic Development – Featured
leaders from across the globe share their model programs that
bolster the business of culture.
• Strategic Finance Structures for the Cultural Economy – Financial
and investment leaders discuss process and capital development
goals for growing the cultural economy.
• The Expanding Role of Universities and Colleges in the Cultural
Economy – University and college representatives explore how
higher education can develop strategies for further engagement in
cultural economic development.
• Best Practices in Cultural Stewardship – Cultural leaders discuss
valuing and sustaining artistic and cultural resources. They
present best practices in sustaining artistic and cultural products

II. World Bazaar and Marketplace
• Envisioned as a marketplace with arts and crafts that
represent the sights, smells and sounds of a diverse
community, the World Bazaar and Marketplace will
feature artisans and vendors from around the world,
where visitors can find unique and exotic keepsakes
and fine arts. The World
• Bazaar will also provide an opportunity for participants
to establish new markets worldwide by showcasing
their cultural assets. This interactive Bazaar and
Marketplace will feature an international children’s art
exhibition, as well as an “international spotlights”
stage that hosts various presentations. The World
Bazaar and Marketplace will take place on Friday,
October 30 and Saturday, November 1, 2008. To find

III. Louisiana Passport Events

Louisiana Passport events will span the entire month of October


and host events in nearly every community across the state.
These communities will showcase their unique cultural assets
allowing visitors to travel throughout Louisiana creating their own
itinerary for exploration. International spotlights will also be
hosted at Louisiana Passport events.
