CCP303.17 1
Objectives

On completion of this period , you would be

able to :
 Calculate Arithmetic Mean
 Under Individual Series
 Direct method
 Short-cut method

CCP303.17 2
Recap

 Averages are of five types. They are Arithmetic

Mean, Geometric Mean, Harmonic Mean, Median
and Mode
 A.M is a single value that represents the entire
data and lie centrally
 A.M = x
N

CCP303.17 3
Statistical Series

Defined as things or attributes of things arranged

according to some logical order

CCP303.17 4
Classification of Statistical Series

STATISTICAL SERIES

Ungrouped Data
Grouped Data
(Individual Series)

Discrete Series Continuous Series

CCP303.17 5
Individual Series

 Items listed individually

 Known as variables
 Denoted by X

Ex: Marks of 10 students

Incomes of five persons
Weights of eight boys

CCP303.17 6
Calculation of Arithmetic Mean
Individual Series
Direct Method

Steps:

 Add together the various values and obtain total

i.e., ∑X
 Divide the total by the number of observations i.e. N

CCP303.17 7
Symbolically

x1  x 2  x 3 .....  xn
X or A.M =
N
or

x
N
Where
X = Arithmetic mean
∑X = Sum of all the values of X
N = Number of observations

CCP303.17 8
Example 1:

Marks of 10 students
in Statistics out of 100 are:

48, 61, 76, 89, 36, 54, 96, 68, 20, 52

Calculate Arithmetic mean?

CCP303.17 9
Solution to Ex.1:

A.M. = x
N
48  61  76  89  36  54  96  68  20  52
A.M. = 10

= 600/10
= 60
A.M. = 60 marks

CCP303.17 10
Example 2:

Compute Arithmetic Mean

by Direct method

Marks obtained by 6 students

56, 75, 34, 64, 48 and 22

CCP303.17 11
Solution to Ex.2:
Calculation of Arithmetic Mean
Roll Nos. Marks (x)
1 56
2 75
3 34
4 64
5 48
6 22
∑X 299
=
CCP303.17 12
Solution contd..

A.M. = x Substitute the values

N in the formula

= 299/6

= 49.8

A.M. = 49.8 marks

CCP303.17 13
A.M. – Short-cut method:

Why we need a short-cut method?

 To do the calculations faster

 To reduce the calculation time

CCP303.17 14
AM – INDIVIDUAL SERIES
SHORTCUT METHOD

Steps:
 Take any item as Assumed Mean
 Take the Deviations of items from the Assumed
Mean
 Denote these Deviations by ‘ d ‘

CCP303.17 15
Individual Series – Short-cut Method
Steps contd:

 Obtain the sum of these Deviations i.e., ∑d

 Apply the formula XA

d
N

 If assumed mean is the actual mean, then the

sum of deviations will become zero

CCP303.17 16
Arithmetic Mean - Formula
Short-cut method

X  A
d
N

Where
X = Arithmetic Mean
∑d = Sum of the deviations from
assumed mean
N = Number of observations
A = Assumed Mean
CCP303.17 17
Example 3:

Calculate Arithmetic mean when:

Marks of 10 students
in Statistics out of 100 given:

48, 61, 76, 89, 36, 54, 96, 68, 20, 52

CCP303.17 18
Solution

Calculation of Arithmetic Mean

by Shortcut Method

CCP303.17 19
A=ASSUMED
Solution MEAN

S.No Marks(x) Deviation(d)

(X-A), A=54
1 48 -6 (48-54)
2 61 +7 (61-54)
3 76 +22 (76-54)
4 89 +35 (89-54)
5 36 -18 (36-54)
6 54 +42 (96-54)
7 96 0 (54-54)
8 68 +14 (68-54)
9 20 -34 (20-54)
10 52 -2 (52-54)
∑d=60

CCP303.17 20
Solution contd..
Arithmetic Mean = A  d
N

= 54 + 60/10
= 54 + 6
= 60
Arithmetic Mean = 60 marks

CCP303.17 21
Example 4
Short-cut method

From the following marks obtained by 6

students compute the Arithmetic mean by
short-cut method?

56, 75, 34, 64, 48 and 22

CCP303.17 22
Solution for Ex.4:
CALCULATION OF ARITHMETIC MEAN

Roll Marks d=(X-48) A=48

Numbers X
1 56 +8
2 75 +27
3 34 -14
4 64 +16
5 48 0
6 22 -26
N=6 ∑d = +11

CCP303.17 23
Solution contd..
X or Arithmetic Mean = A
 d
N

here A = 48, ∑d = 11 and N = 6, then

Arithmetic Mean = 48+

11
6

= 48 + 1.8

= 49.8
Arithmetic Mean = 49.8 marks
CCP303.17 24
Important Points to Remember:

 Each method gives the same answer

 Any variable can be taken as assumed mean

whether it is available in the data or not
 The nearer the assumed mean is to the actual
mean, the lesser are the calculations

CCP303.17 25
Summary

 Individual Series is a series where items are

listed singly after observation
 Arithmetic Mean – Direct method =
x
N

A
 d
 Arithmetic Mean – Short-cut Method = N
