CCP-303.20 1
Objectives

On completion of this period, you would be

able to learn :
 Calculate Arithmetic Mean

 Under Continuous Series

 short-cut method

CCP-303.20 2
Recap

 Continuous Series is a series where items are arranged

in groups or classes continuously

Arithmetic Mean – Direct method = N
fm

 Class Limits: The lowest and Highest values of the class

 Class interval: The difference between upper and lower
limits of a class

CCP-303.20 3
Calculation of Arithmetic Mean
Continuous Series
Short-cut Method
Steps:

 Obtain the mid-point of each class

 Select an assumed mean A
 Take the deviation of each class mid-point from
“assumed mean” and call them “ d “

CCP-303.20 4
Discrete Series - Short-cut method

Steps contd.

 Multiply these deviations by the respective

frequencies of each class i.e, fd
 Obtain the total i.e. ∑fd
 Apply the formula

CCP-303.20 5
Formula

X or A.M. =A 
 fd
N

Where
X = Arithmetic mean
f = frequency
d = (m-A)
∑fd = Sum of products of the deviations from the
assumed mean and the frequencies
N = Total frequency

CCP-303.20 6
Example 1:

Find the mean from the following frequency

distribution in short-cut method.

Marks 0-10 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60

No of 10 20 50 60 40 20
students

CCP-303.20 7
Solution to Ex. 1:
Let the marks be denoted by X and the number
of students by f
CALCULATION OF ARITHMETIC MEAN
A= 35

Marks(x No of Midpoint d = (m-A) Fd

) students s (m) d = (m-35)
(f)
0-10 10 5 -30 -300
10-20 20 15 -20 -400
20-30 50 25 -10 -500
30-40 60 35 0 0
40-50 40 45 +10 +400
50-60 20 55 +20 +400
N=200 ∑fd= -400
CCP-303.20 8
Solution contd.

A.M. = A + ∑fd
N
A.M. = 35 + -400
200
= 35 – 2
= 33
A.M. = 33 marks

CCP-303.20 9
Example 2:

From the following data compute Arithmetic

Mean by direct method:

Marks 0-10 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60

No of 5 20 25 30 20 10
students

CCP-303.20 10
Solution to Ex.2:
Let the marks be denoted by X and the
number of students by f
CALCULATION OF ARITHMETIC MEAN
A=35
Marks(x) No of Mid-points d=(m-35) Fd
students (m)
0-10 5 5 -30 -150
10-20 20 15 -20 -400
20-30 25 25 -10 -250
30-40 30 35 0 0
40-50 20 45 +10 +200
50-60 10 55 +20 +200
N=110 ∑fd=-400

CCP-303.20 11
Solution contd..
A
 fd
A.M. = N
400
A.M. = 35 
110

= 35 – 3.6363

= 31.3636

A.M. = 31 marks

CCP-303.20 12
Important Points to Remember

 Follow ANY method, result (answer) will be SAME

 Mid-point = lower limit + upper limit

2
 Any value of ‘ m ‘ can be taken as assumed mean

CCP-303.20 13
Summary

 Calculation of A.M. of Continuous Series can be done

in three ways i.e. direct method, short-cut method and
step deviation method
A
 fd
 Arithmetic Mean – short-cut method = N
