CCP-303.39 1
Objectives
Unequal classes
CCP-303.39 2
Recap
Median is middle-most value of the variables
arranged in order
Median for ungrouped data = Size of (n+1)/2th
observation if observations are arranged in
ascending or descending order
For Discrete series M = Size of (N+1)/2th item
where M = Median, N = Total frequency
In Continuous series, use N/2 as rank of
Median
Median formula for continuous series is
M= L2 – L1 (m-c)
L 1 + ---------------
f1
CCP-303.39 3
Calculation of Median
Continuous Series
Steps:
Determine Median class
Use N/2th item as rank of Median
After ascertaining Median class, use formula to
know exact value of Median
If class intervals are unequal, frequencies need not
be adjusted to make the class intervals equal and
apply same formula
CCP-303.39 4
Formula for Median – Continuous
Series
L2 – L1
M = L1 + --------- (m-c)
f1
Where
M = Median
L1 = Lower limit of the median class
L2 = Upper limit of the median class
f1 = frequency of the median class
m = N/2
C = Cumulative frequency of class preceding Median class
CCP-303.39 5
Example 1
Calculate the Median from the following data:
No. of Students 5 15 30 8 2

N = 60
CCP-303.39 7
m = Size of N/2th item
= Size of 60/2th item
= Size of 30th item
Median lies in the class 30-60

= 40
Hence, Median value = 40

Example 2
Calculate Median for the following frequency
distribution:
Monthly wages in Rs. No. of workers
50-80 30
80-100 127
100-110 140
110-120 240
120-130 176
130-150 135
150-180 20

Solution to Ex. 2

130-150 135 848
150-180 20 868
180-200 3 871
N = 871

Check 435.5th item in
m = Size of N/2 item
th

= Size of 871/2th item the corresponding
= Size of 435.5th item class
L2 – L1 (m-c)
Median = L1 + ----------
f1
L1=110, L2=120, m=435.5, c=297, f1=240
120-110 (435.5-297)
Median = 110 + ------------
240
= 110 + (10 x 138.5)/240
= 110 + 1385/240
= 110 + 5.77
= 115.77
Hence, Median = 115.77

Example 3
Calculate Median for the following
frequency distribution:

Solution to Ex. 3
CALCULATION OF MEDIAN
CCP-303.39 13
m = Size of N/2th item
= Size of 250/2th item
= Size of 125th item
Median lies in the class 3999.5-4999.5 group
L2 – L1
Median = L1 + ---------- (m-c)
f1
L1=3999.5, L2=4999.5, m=125, c=65, f1=70
4999.5 - 3999.5
Median = 3999.5 + --------------------- (125-65)
70
= 3999.5 + (1000 x 60)/70
= 3999.5 + 60000/70
= 3999.5 + 857.14
= 4856.64
Hence, Median = 4856.64
