ANDHRA PRADESH
Name : K. Srinivas
Designation : Senior Lecturer
Branch : DCCP
Institute : SGM Govt. Polytechnic,
Abdullapurmet
Year/Semester : II Yr / III Semester
Subject : Quantitative Techniques - I
Sub.Code : CCP303
Topic : Mode
Duration : 50 Mts
Sub-Topic : Advantages &
Disadavantages of Mode
Teaching Aids : PPT & Animations
CCP303.50 1
Objectives :
On Completion of this period, you would be
able to :
 State the Advantages and Disadvantages
of Mode
 Explain the importance of Mode
 Explain Emperical Relationship among
Mean, Median and Mode

CCP303.50 2
Recap :

 Individual Series
 Discrete Series
 Continuous Series
∆1
Formula: Z = L + ------------- X i
∆1 + ∆2

CCP303.50 3
Mode - Advantages:
 Mode is the most typical or representative value
of a distribution
 Not affected by extremely large or small items
 Value determined in open-end classes without
ascertaining class limits
 Useful to describe qualitative phenomenon
 Determined graphically

CCP303.50 4
Mode - Disadvantages:
 Value of Z cannot always be determined.
 Need bi modal or multimodal series
 Not suitable for algebraic manipulations
 Z value NOT based on each and every item of
series
 Not rigidly defined
 Z - most unstable average and its true value is
difficult to determine
 Disadvantages of the Mode dominate its good
features. Hence not frequently used

CCP303.50 5
Importance (Uses) of Mode :
 Z - Useful to:
 describe qualitative data
 express preferences where quantitative
measurements are not possible
 compare consumer preferences for different
products
 compare modal preferences of different groups of
people
 discrete series
 outstandingly large frequency

CCP303.50 6
Relationship among Mean, Median, &
Mode :

 A distribution in which the values of Mean,

Median and Mode coincide is a Symmetrical
distribution
 If they are not equal, distribution is
asymmetric or skewed

Asymmetrical Distribution

Mean ≠ Median ≠ Mode

CCP303.50 8
Formula for Asymmetrical
Distribution :

Mode (Z) = Mean – 3(Mean – Median)

(or)

Mode (Z) = 3Median – 2Mean

CCP303.50 9
Application :

 When two values, out of the three (X, M and Z)

are given, the third value can be calculated
using formula of Emperical relationship
between the three averages.

CCP303.50 10
Summary :

 Mode is the most typical value which summary

is not affected by extremes
 If Mean ≠ Median ≠ Mode, then the
distribution is Asymmetrical

CCP303.50 11
Quiz

1. A distribution in which the values of

Mean, Median & Mode coincide is :
a) Symmetrical Distribution
b) Asymmetrical Distribution
c) Skewed
d) Range

CCP303.50 12
Quiz

2. The formula to find out mode when the

distribution is asymmetrical
a) 3Mean – (Mean – Median)
b) Mean – 3(Mean – Median)
c) 2Median – 3Mean
d) 3Medain – 2Mean

CCP303.50 13
Frequently Asked Questions :

1. In a symmetrical distribution the value

of Median is 42.8 and the value of
Mode is 40. Find the Mean.
2. In a symmetrical distribution, the value
of Mean = 133, Median = 132.8. Find
Mode.

CCP303.50 14
Frequently Asked Questions :

1. Define Mode and explain its importance.

2. What are the merits and demerits of mode.
3. Explain the relationship among the Mean,
Median and Mode.

CCP303.50 15
Assignment
1. If the mode and mean of a moderately
asymmetrical series are respectively 16 inches
and 15.6 inches, what would be its most probable
median?
2. In a moderately skewed distribution, AM = 26.4
and Mode = 28.2. Find the value of Median
3. In a moderately asymmetrical distribution, the
values of Mode and Median are 20 and 24
respectively. Locate the value of Mean
