CCP303.62 1
Objectives

On completion of this period , you would be able to

 Calculate Mean Deviation - Continuous series

CCP303.62 2
Recap

Mean Deviation and Co-efficient of MD

 Individual series
 Discrete series

CCP303.62 3
Mean Deviation - Continuous series:

Steps
 Find mid points for each class
 Find desired average (Mean or Median or Mode)
 Take deviations from Average ignoring signs,
i.e. IDI
 Multiply these deviations with respective frequencies
i.e., f IDI
 Sum the products ∑ f IDI
 Apply the formula

CCP303.62 4
Formula of Mean Deviation :
M.D. = Ʃf |D| /N

Coefficient MD = MD/Mean or Mode or Mode

M.D.= Mean Deviation

| D | = sum of the deviations from
an average neglecting signs
N = No. of items.
f = frequency

CCP303.62 5
Example 1

Find the Median and Mean Deviation of the following data:

Size Frequency
0-10 7
10-20 12
20-30 18
30-40 25
40-50 16
50-60 14
60-70 8

CCP303.62 6
Solution to Ex.1:
Calculation of Mean Deviation
Size f c.f m.p | m- f|D|
m 35.2 |
|D|
0-10 7 7 5 30.2 211.4
10-20 12 19 15 20.2 242.4
20-30 18 37 25 10.2 183.6
30-40 25 62 35 0.2 5.0
40-50 16 78 45 9.8 156.8
50-60 14 92 55 19.8 277.2
60-70 8 100 65 29.8 238.4

N=100 Ʃf |D|
=1314.8

CCP303.62 7
Solution contd

Median = Size of N/2th item

= size of (100/2)th item = size of 50th item

Median lies in the class 30-40

Median = L+N/2 - c.f xi

f
L=30, N/2 = 50, c.f = 37, f = 25,I =10
Median = 30+ 50 – 37 x 10
2
= 30+5.2
= 35.2
M.D. = Ʃf | D | / N
= 1314.8 / 100
= 13.148

CCP303.62 8
Example 2

CCP303.62 9
Solution to Ex.2:

Calculation of Mean Deviation through AM

Class m f fm IDI = f IDI
interval (m-
34)
0-10 5 5 25 29 145
10-20 15 7 105 19 133
20-30 25 8 200 9 72

50-60 55 6 330 21 126

N=60 ∑fm=2040 ∑f|

DI=700

CCP303.62 10
Solution contd

X =∑ fm / N

=2040 / 60 =34

MD = ∑f IDI /N

=700 / 60 =11.666

Coefficient of MD =11.666 / 34=0.343

CCP303.62 11
Summary
 Mean deviation = ∑f IDI/N

 Coefficient of MD =MD / Mean or Median or Mode
