PERSUASIVE WRITING
The persuasive essay, also known as the argument essay, utilizes logic and reason to show that one idea is more legitimate than another idea. It attempts to persuade a reader to adopt a certain point of view or to take a particular action. The argument must always use sound reasoning and solid evidence by stating facts, giving logical reasons, and using examples.
Focus on Persuasive Task 1- Choose ONE: (this goes in your binder in the under construction section)
Chocolate or Vanilla? MacDonalds or Subway? Pop or Country Music? Football or Basketball? Reality or Regular TV? English or Math? Winter or Summer? Dog or Cat?
Chocolate
Dense in calories fills you up Huge mood booster and a way to my heart!! Delicious, delectable, delightful
Subway
They offer more nutritious choices than
McDonalds Tastes better Half the amount of calories and actually fills you up. Is there even a choice between the two???
Pop
Can drive or clean, etc while listening to my
jams and makes people WANT to work out! Creative, catchy, upbeat...not whiny like country. Called pop for a reason...popular...everyone loves it!
Exaggeration Emotional words (appeal to the heart) Invitation or challenge(to act or think) Incentive (Reward) Fact (e.g. statistics) Opinion and Assertion (an opinion expressed as fact) Use of appealing descriptive language Rhetorical question (a question that does not need an answer) Repetition (careful with this one) Comparatives and superlatives (comparing two things)
Things to Remember:
Explain what they person reading it will get out of it. Appeal to their feelings and emotions. Make them
feel sympathy, empathy or guilty. But dont whine too much! Pressure them ! Tell them what will happen if you dont get what you are asking for. Make it sound as though doing what you want is crucial. Make use of three-part lists three reasons, three benefits, three emotive words. Use strong adjectives (best, most important) and verbs (will, need, must, should, could). Show, where appropriate, that you can employ formal language.
( and support) to back up your opinions as well as some techniques to articulate those reasons You also learned that you need to have a minimum of three reasons to build (and support) an effective argument
You should have the following things in your binder (in the under construction section):
Task 1: Choose One (include the reasons you
gave for your choices) Task 2: Persuade your Parents (argument and support) Note: You should have handed in a paragraph to me on Friday Nov. 4 for marks (thank you letter or journal entry)
