Objectives

On completion of this period, you would be

able to:
 Understand the Arithmetic Mean
 Insert n A.Ms. between two numbers
 Solve the problems relating to insertion of n
A.Ms. between two numbers
 Solve the problems relating to AP

CCP403.61 2
Recap

 The Arithmetic Progressions

 To find the nth term of AP
 To find sum of n terms of AP

CCP403.61 3
Arithmetic Mean :

 When three quantities are in AP, the middle

one is said to be the Arithmetic Mean of the
other two.
 If a,b,c, are in AP, then ‘b’ is called
Arithmetic Mean between ‘a’ and ‘c’

CCP403.61 4
Arithmetic Mean :

If a,b,c are in AP

Then common difference d = b-a = c-b

b-a = c-b
... 2b = a+c
I.e. b = (a+c)/2
Thus, Arithmetic Mean between a and c is (a+c)/2

CCP403.61 5
Arithmetic Mean :

Thus to find the AM of any two nos, divide the sum

of the two nos. by 2.
Hence, AM between two numbers is half their sum

 If x1, x2 , x3 , ……xn are ‘n’ numbers then their

AM is given by:
 AM = 1/n(x1+ x2 + x3 + ……+ xn)

CCP403.61 6
Arithmetic Mean :

Given two quantities, it is always possible to

insert any no.of terms such that the whole series
so formed is an A.P.

CCP403.61 7
Arithmetic Mean :

Example:1

Insert 3 AMs between 2 and 10

Solution to Ex. 1
let x1 , x2 , x3 are the 3 AMs between 2 and 10
... 2, x1 , x2 , x3, 10 is an A.P. where

CCP403.61 8
Solution contd

t1 = a = 2
t5 = a+(5-1)d = a+4d = 10
i.e. d = (10-2)/4 = 2

... x1 = a+d = 2+2 = 4,

x2 = a+2d = 2+2x2 = 6,
x3= a+3d = 2+3x2 = 8

... the three AM s are 4,6,8

CCP403.61 9
Example 2

Insert 5 AMs between 4 and 22

Solution to Ex.2
Total no.of terms in AP would be 7
First term a = 4
Seventh term t7 = a+6d = 22

CCP403.61 10
Solution contd

6d = 22 - 4
Therefore, d = (22-4)/6
= 3
a=4
d=3
... The five AMs are a+d, a+2d, a+3d, a+4d, a+5d
i.e. 7, 10, 13, 16, 19

CCP403.61 11
Example 3

Find the sum of all integers 1 to 100 not

divisible by 3 and 5

Solution to Ex. 3
let the required value = Sn-3-5
First, find out the sum of integers Sn 1 to 100
Later, find out the sum integers divisible by 3 (S3)
find out the sum of integers divisible by 5 (S5)
find out the sum of integers both divisible
by 3 and 5 (S3-5)
Now find out Sn-3-5 = Sn – S3 – S5 + S3-5
CCP403.61 12
Solution contd

•Sum of integers 1 to 100

Sn = n(n+1)/2
= 100 (101)/2
= 5,050

CCP403.61 13
Solution contd

Sum of integers divisible by 3

i.e. S3 = 3+6+9+ ….. +99

= 3(1+2+3+,……….+33)
= 3(n(n+1)/2)
= 3x33x34/2 = 1683

CCP403.61 14
Solution contd

Sum of integers divisible by 5

i.e.S5 = 5+10+15+ ….. +10

= 5(1+2+3+,……….+20)
= 5(n(n+1)/2)
= 5x20x21/2 =1050

CCP403.61 15
Solution contd

Sum of integers divisible by both 3 and 5

i.e.S3-5 = 15+ 30 +45+ ….. + 90

= 15(1+2+3+,……….+6)
= 15(n(n+1)/2)
= 15x6x7/2 = 315

CCP403.61 16
Solution contd

Sn-3-5 = Sn – S3 – S5 + S3-5
(since the sum of integers divisible by both
3 and 5 are in both S3 and S5 it should be
added once)
= 5050 – 1683 – 1050 + 315 = 2632

CCP403.61 17
Example 4

Find the sum to ‘n’ terms of 1x2x3 + 2x3x4

+3x4x5+….

Solution to Ex.4
The series is 1x2x3 + 2x3x4 + 4x5x6 + …….
Thus, the nth term will be n(n+1)(n+2)
= n2+n(n+2)
= n3 + 3n2 + 2n

CCP403.61 18
Solution contd

nth term of the series = n3 + 3n2 + 2n

Sum to ‘n’ terms = Σn3 + 3 Σn2 + 2 Σn

= n2(n+1)2 + 3 n(n+1)(2n+1) + 2n(n+1)

4 6 2

= n(n+1) [ n(n+1) + (2n+1) + 1]

4 2

CCP403.61 19
Solution contd

n(n+1) [n(n+1) + 2(2n+1) + 4]

4

= n(n+1) [n2+n + 4n+2 + 4 ]

4
= n(n+1) [n2+5n+6 ]
4
... The sum of n terms of the series
= n(n+1)(n+2)(n+3) / 4

Summary

So far we have discussed the following

 To know the Arithmetic Mean of two nos.
I.e. if a,b,c, are in A.P., b is called A.M.
I.e. = (a+c)/2
 Insert ‘n’ A.Ms. Between two numbers
 Solve different problems of A.P.
