EC105.56 1
Teaching Aids : PPT & DIAGRAMS
Objectives

On completion of this period, you would be able

to know the

• Constructional features of I.F& Pulse transformers.

EC105.56 2
Recap
We have discussed in the last period

• Constructional features of A.F& R.F transformers.

5. Which type of core is used in RF transformers?

Air core.

9. Which core material is used for the construction of AF

transformer?

Nickel iron of high permeability.

EC105.56 3
I.F transformer
I.F Transformer Diagram

EC105.56 4
• It is narrow band type transformer.

• It is designed to operate at a fixed frequency called

intermediate frequency.

EC105.56 5
Constructional features of I.F Transformer

• It is mostly made with air core or ferrite core

• In this transformer both primary and secondary windings

are tuned to get good performance.

EC105.56 6
These transformers are enclosed in a metallic cases for
screening as shown in figure-2

Figure-2

EC105.56 7
Pulse Transformer

• It comes under the category of wide band transformers.

• It is used to transfer pulses from one circuit to another

circuit.

• The transmitted pulse is either exact replica of the

original pulse or it has undergone a change in its
amplitude or polarity or both.

EC105.56 8
Constructional Features of Pulse Transformer

The construction of pulse transformer depends

primarily on

• Lowest frequency

• Power rating

These two factors determine the choice of the core .

EC105.56 9
• Powdered iron core or ferrite core is usually preferred at

these high frequencies.

• For high power requirement, nickel iron permalloys are

used.

EC105.56 10
• The leakage inductance and capacitance may be
reduced considerably by using split winding shown in
figure-3

Figure-3
