EC302.56 TO 58 5
Frequency response curve for transformer
coupled amplifiers.

• It has a poor frequency response.

• Voltage gain is not uniform over the audio range

of frequencies .

• Gain is constant over small range of frequency.

EC302.56 TO 58 6
• Gain is low at both the low frequency and high
frequency range.

• There is a peaky response at the high frequency

response.

• The fall in gain at low frequencies is due to the

small value of inductance of the T/F primary.

EC302.56 TO 58 7
• Increasing the value of inductance increases the
size of the transformer and also increases the
inter layer capacitance .

• Moderately large primary inductance will be

used to provide adequate gain at low
frequencies.

EC302.56 TO 58 8
At HF frequencies:

• At high frequencies the distributed capacitance

existing between different turns of the winding

acts as a bypass capacitor and so reduces the

output voltage and hence the gain.

EC302.56 TO 58 9
• The fall in gain at high frequencies is due to the
shunt capacitance.

• The value of capacitance used for tuning the

primary is around 0.01 to 0.110μf.

• The peaky response is due to total shunting

capacitance coming across transformer primary
and resonating at the high frequency end.

EC302.56 TO 58 10
• Hence a capacitor is to be connected
across the primary to tune this (shunting
capacitance) to obtain required high frequency
boost.

• So there will be disproportionate amplification of

frequencies in complete signal such as music,
speech etc.

EC302.56 TO 58 11
• There is a frequency distortion , i.e all
frequencies are not amplified equally.

• In fact the flat part of the curve is very small as

compared to RC coupling.

Summary

In these periods we discussed about :

• Plotting frequency response curve for transformer

coupled amplifier.

• Measurement setup.

• Description of frequency response curve.

• Comparison of amplifiers.

EC302.56 TO 58 15
• The frequency response is poor i.e.. gain is constant

only over a small range of frequency.

• The output voltage is equal to the collector current

multiplied reactance of primary.

• At high frequencies the reactance of primary is high,

resulting in reduced gain.

EC302.56 TO 58 16
• At low frequencies the reactance of primary is low,

resulting in reduced gain.

• Flat response region of the curve is small compared to R-C
