EC304.51 1
OBJECTIVES
On the completion of this period, you would be
able to know

• working of Parallel in – Serial out Shift Registers.

• working of Parallel in – Parallel out Shift Registers.

EC304.51 2
Recap
• What is a register?
 Register is a group of flip-flops that stores data in
binary form.

• What is a shift register?

 A shift register can shift its content either to its left or
to right in synchronization with its clock input

EC304.51 5
PARALLEL IN – SERIAL OUTSHIFT REGISTER

• write/Shift is a control input that allows the Four bits of

data D3, D2, D1, D0 inputs to enter into the register in

parallel or shift the data in serial.

• When write/shift is low, data from inputs D3D2D1D0 are

loaded into the register

EC304.51 6
PARALLEL IN – SERIAL OUT SHIFT REGISTER
(Contd)

• When a clock pulse is applied, the flip-flop with D=1 will set

and flip-flop with D=0 will be reset.

• When write/shift is high, data bits shift to right from one stage
to the next.

EC304.51 8
WORKING
• When the clear input is activated the content of the register
resets to 0000

• The parallel input can be applied at D0D1D2D3

• When the input is applied the register loads the input on arrival
of the next clock pulse

• The parallel output can be obtained from Q0Q1Q2Q3
