EC305.36 1
Objectives:

Upon completion of this period you would be able to know

about:

• Applications of FM.
• Problems on FM
• Problems on PM.

EC305.36 2
Applications of FM

1. FM radio broadcasting.

3. TV sound broadcasting.

5. Two-way mobile radio.

7. Cellular telephone.

5. Digital data transmission.

EC305.36 3
1. An FM broadcast transmitter operates at its maximum
deviation of 75 KHz. Find the modulation index for a
sinusoidal signal with frequency of
(b) 15 KHz
(c) 50 Hz

Sol: Given data is:

Max. deviation (δ)= 75 KHz
Signal frequency (fm)= 15 KHz

EC305.36 4
Recap
1. Give the formula for modulation index in FM wave?

3. Give the relation between frequency deviation

modulation index?

EC305.36 5
(a) For fm =15 KHz
mf= δ/fm
= 75 KHz/15 KHz
= 5 radians

(b) For fm= 50 Hz

mf= δ/fm
= 75 KHz/50 Hz
= 1500 radians

EC305.36 6
2. Find the carrier & modulating frequencies, the modulation
index and the maximum deviation of FM wave represented by
the voltage equation:
v= 12 sin (6x108t+ 5 sin1200t)
How much power will this FM wave dissipate in an 10Ω
resistor?

Sol: Given data:

Carrier voltage (Vc)=12V
ωct = 6x108t

EC305.36 7
m f= 5
ωmt= 1200t
We know, ωc = 2πfc
fc= ωc / 2π
= 6x108 / 2π
= 95.5 MHz
ωm =2πfm
fm= ωm / 2π
=1200/ 2π
= 199 Hz

EC305.36 8
mf= 5 (given data)
δ= mfxfm
= 5x199 Hz
= 995 Hz

P= Vcrms2/R
= (12x√2)2/10
= 7.2w

Quiz

1. An FM signal with a modulation index mf is passed a

frequency tripler. The wave is the output of tripler will
have a modulation index of
• mf/3
• mf
• 3 mf
• 9 mf

EC305.36 11
2. A pre-emphasis circuit provides extra noise immunity by

• Boosting the base frequencies

• Amplifying the higher audio frequencies.
• Pre amplifying the whole audio band
• Converting the PM to FM

EC305.36 12
Frequently asked questions and Problems

• List the Applications of FM

1.When the modular MF frequency as FM system us 400

HZ and modulating voltage is 2.4v, the modulation index
is 60. calculate the maximum deviation. What is the
modulation when the modulating frequency is reduced to
250 HZ and the modulating voltage is simultaneously
raised to 3.2v?

EC305.36 13
2. A 500-HZ modulating voltage fed into a PM generate
produces a frequency deviation of 2.25KHZ. What is
modulation index? If the amplitude of the modulating
voltage is kept constant, but the frequency is raised to
6KHZ, what si the new deviation.
