(SPEED, VELOCITY)

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the of the presentation, the student must define or recognized Motion.
Differentiate speed and velocity. Calculate speed and velocity of an object.

MOTIVATION
Directions: Give what is needed and answer questions below.

1. Which of the pictures below shows a motion?

INTRODUCTION
After that activity we could now say that Motion is all around us. We see it in the everyday activity of people, of cars on the highway, in the wind, and with patience, we see it in nighttimes stars. Even in the light that let us see motion is caused by motion of electrons in atom. Truly, motion is everywhere.

MOTION
Motion refers to a change in location of an object with respect to its reference point. Examples of these are:

A moving Skier

A flying Rocket

A falling man

A- SPEED
Speed is the measure of how fast is an object over a period of time. Example of this is:

A car moves 50 km/h

Speed is also defined as:

speed(S)= distance (d) time (t) Example: If a man walk 150 meters to working place in 300 seconds, what is the average speed of the man?

150 meters

SOLUTION
Given: d= 10 km t= 5 h

s= d
t = 150 meters 300 seconds = 0.5 m/s

Formula for the speed

Substitute the given values

Average speed of the man

B-VELOCITY
Velocity is the measurement of how fast is an object over a period of time with a respect to direction. Example of this is:

A school bus travelled at 30 km/h to east.

Velocity is also defined as:

velocity (v) = speed (s) and direction (d)

Example: A rocket fly 1500 km to the moon at exactly 35 hours, what is the velocity of the rocket?

Moon

SOLUTION
Given: d= 1500 miles t= 35 h Formula for the velocity s= d (direction) t = 1500 km (to the moon) Substitute the given values 35 h = 42.86 km/h to the moon Velocity of the rocket
