JCI Concept and History

JCI CONCEPT AND HISTORY

I. How It Began
The origin of Junior Chamber can be traced as far back as 1910, in the city of St Louis, Missouri, United States of America. A young man by the name of Henry Giessenbier, a bank cashier, felt that young people acting in a voluntary capacity could fashion a new standard of life for their communities. On October 13, 1915, he called for a meeting with 32 young men present, and an organization was formed under the name of "Young Men's Progressive Civic Association". It was mainly for the community betterment.

JCI CONCEPT AND HISTORY

II. History of JCIM
The Junior Chamber movement was introduced to Malaysia (then the Federation of Malaysia) in 1954. Junior Chamber in Sarawak and Junior Chamber in Sabah were affiliated to Junior Chamber International in 1956 and in 1963 respectively. Junior Chamber Peninsular Malaysia, Junior Chamber Sarawak and Junior Chamber Sabah were then identified as three different National Organization (NOMs) directly affiliated to Junior Chamber International.

JCI CONCEPT AND HISTORY

II. History of JCIM
On 11th October 1975, Junior Chamber Malaysia was formed with the signing of a Merge Agreement between the three separate national organizations in Kuala Lumpur. A Protem Board of Directors under the chairmanship of JCI Senator V T Nathan, Past President of Kuala Lumpur Junior Chamber was founded.
In 1976 Junior Chamber Malaysia obtained temporary registration from the Registrar of Societies to operate. The 1st National Convention was held in 1976 itself in Kuala Lumpur. At this National Convention, JCI Senator George Chang was elected the First National President.

JCI VISION
To be the leading global network of young active citizens.
It is a statement JCI members have noted is still relevant and would still lead to achieving a permanent and everlasting world peace, as JCI founder Henry Giessenbier expressed in 1915.

What does it mean? Our role?

JCI wants its members in this network to be young and active citizens.
Young people taking the lead in community solutions rather than complaining and expecting someone else, government or society to solve the challenges. By being active members should be qualified to take the challenge and together, with other active forces in the community, work towards a better future for all.

JCI MISSION
The JCI Mission now states: To provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change.

How can we do it?

There are many projects and activities that are not directly related to the Mission, such as fundraising, charity or public relations projects, but every project or activity must have it is core purpose: The opportunities to develop new skills; Skills that empower the members The empowerment that gives them the edge to be active citizens and as active citizens they create positive change.

The Declaration of Principles

We believe: That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life; That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations; That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise; That government should be of laws rather than of men; That earths great treasure lies in human personality; And that service to humanity is the best work of life.

INTERPRETATION OF THE JCI CREED

"We believe . . . Everyone must believe in some ideal, principle or philosophy. To believe is to practice what is believed to be true.

INTERPRETATION OF THE JCI CREED

" . . . That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life . . .
The Junior Chamber membership, drawn from many religious backgrounds, is united by a common bond of faith; that man lives by the will of (his/her) God, that God's will for man is good; and that the life worthwhile is lived in harmony with His eternal plan."

INTERPRETATION OF THE JCI CREED

" . . . That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations . . . " This line breaks down all the boundaries that have been imagined by mankind. It simply means that all men and women are equal.

INTERPRETATION OF THE JCI CREED

" . . . That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise . . . " Junior Chamber members believe that man should be free to use his skills and abilities to the limit in improving his economy. Where economic improvement has been greatest, man has been free to follow his dream of making a personal fortune by doing something never done before, or by doing it better."

INTERPRETATION OF THE JCI CREED

" . . . That government should be of laws rather than of men . . . Means that no one should be above the law, and that the law should be the same for all people, no matter what status they hold in society. The government must be based on constitutional law, accepted and ratified by a majority of the people. "In a free society, the fundamental law is derived from the people. It is they who hold the final authority."

INTERPRETATION OF THE JCI CREED

" . . . That earth's great treasure lies in human personality . . . " Every individual has a separate and unique personality. That uniqueness makes the human personality earth's greatest treasure. It cannot be duplicated nor can it be made. It is not the quantity nor the length of life that gives it zest, but the quality of living, the achievement we make in terms of human progress."

INTERPRETATION OF THE JCI CREED

" . . . And that service to humanity is the best work of life." A person who believes in the Creed will most definitely find service to humanity to be the best work of life. The world looks at the contribution such a life has made and marks the one who lived it as a benefactor of the race; yet he knows in truth the greater benefit has been his own."
