Reasons & solution

Shamsul Arefin ID: 2007-3-10-051 & Jamal Uddin Ahmad ID: 2007-1-10-127

Depth of river (Avg 15 Feet)

Polluted & contaminated water with dust

Difficult to find the main stream of river Sometime spread or narrow

Decrease of fish & other living organisms

Water overflow in rainy season

Change in river direction Draught in some area

Affected farming beside the river

Destruction of rivers natural beauty

Affected water based transportation of Turag river The process of natural water purification has stopped

This is important to protect the Dhaka citys ecosystem and environment.

Research theory: 1. protect water quality. 2. Find the point of water pollution.

Hypothesis: Our hypothesis is, some illegal

human activities are destroying Turag.

Now we will test our hypothesis, whether it is right or wrong.

Area: 2 kilometer around Beribadh area.

Affected Groups:
1. People habited beside Turag River.(9)

2. People survive by the river.(fisherman,boatman,farmer,)(4)

3. Concerned people.(imam & tourist)(2)

Into this research we use Qualitative types of data to test our

hypothesis. To collect this data our tools are taking Interview with the people of this location. Respondent persons are: Fisherman Boatman Teacher Local people Tourists

Interview Questions asked to the groups..

1) How

do you think are the main reason of land corruption/illegal possession of land beside the Turag river Who are doing? 2) What are the main reason for polluting river water? How it is polluting? 3) Is the water useable for household work? If not why? 4) In rainy season why river water creates flood? Do you thing it is unnatural flood? why?

5) Do you think fish & other water living organisms are now 6) 7) 8) 9)

less then before? If yes why? What are the factor that resisting water flow in Turag River? What kind of illegal business are being operated beside Turag River? How are they affecting the river? Who people they are? Why large water vehicles are facing problems in passing through the river?

Q-1.Illegal possession of land

Respondents number Position/Occupation Perception/Answer

Habited beside the river

Local powerful landlord are occupying land beside the river People are making slum.

Fisherman/Boatman

Political party supporters are occupying land

Some so called Cooperative Societies are taking land

Concerned individual (imam, teacher)

Q-2,3,5.Water pollution/Why not useable/Water living organism

Respondents number 9 Position/Occupation Perception/Answer

Habitat beside the river Industrial dust are directly coming to the river Human dust Fisherman/Boatman Water vehicles oil and dust Dragger mud

Concerned individual (imam, teacher)

Industrial chemicals and household dust

Q-4, 8.Why unnatural flood

Respondents number 9 Position/occupation Perception/Answer

Habited beside the river

The bottom of the river is filled with sand deposited by the draggers beside the river Illegal land occupation made the river channel narrower then before draggers business

Fisherman/Boatman

Concerned individual (imam, teacher)

Q-6,7,9. Resist water flow/Illegal business/Transport problem

Respondents number 9 Position/Occupation Perception/Answer

Habitat beside the river

Water vehicle dust Dragger un loading in the middle of the river Illegal land business Bamboo business Some people try to move river movement to protect there illegal land

Fisherman/Boatman

Concerned individual (imam, teacher)

If we sum up all the findings, we can identify some correlated reasons for destruction of Turag River1. Illegal land occupying 2. Dust mismanagement 3. Dragger business 4. Water vehicle dust These reasons do match with our hypothesis. So our hypothesis is true.

Illegal land occupying:

3 Large land has been taken by ruling party supported people. 9 small and big cooperative society has signboards in the river.

Dust Mismanagement:

4 switch gate and many sewage canal are giving the industrial toxic chemical and household garbage continuously.

Dragger business:

5 large and permanent dragger are located in between this 2 km.

Water vehicle dust:

Water vehicle dumping oil and many dust directly to the river water everyday.

Way forwards: Future with solution

In past to solve the problem govt. didnt made formal rule.
In future if we need to solve the problem, the necessary steps

are: Strong government rules and regulation Very strong law enforcement agency Shutting down dust dumping beside the river Especially handle the polythene issue to protect ecosystem Recycling of dust or industrial chemicals.
