Adomian Decomposition Method(ADM)

History
Introduced and developed by George

Adomian A considerable amount of work has been investigated using ADM for linear and nonlinear ODEs, PDEs, and Integral Equations

Adomian Decomposition Method(ADM)

ADM consists of decomposing the unknown function

u(x, y) of any equation into sum of an infinite number of components defined by the decomposition series

(1) Where

Adomian Decomposition Method(ADM)

To give a clear overview of ADM, we first

consider the linear differential equation written in an operator form by (2) where L is the higher order derivative which is assumed to be invertible, R is a linear differential operator of order less than L, and g is the source term

Adomian Decomposition Method(ADM)

Applying inverse operator

for both sides of equation (2) and using the given conditions to obtain (3) where the function f represents the terms arising from the integration of the source term g and using the initial/boundary conditions to evaluate the constants of integration.

Adomian Decomposition Method(ADM)

According to Adomian, the solution u in the form.

(4) Where Components are usually recurrently determined Substituting (4) into both sides of (3) leads to

Adomian Decomposition Method(ADM)

(5)
For simplicity (5) can be rewritten as

(6) The solution can be found by the following Recursive relation (7)

Thus, by calculating all components of un, in

Adomian Decomposition Method(ADM)

(7) the solution can be written as follows:

(8)

Essential Features of ADM

Express the linear or nonlinear PDE in an

operator form Apply the inverse operator to both sides of the equation written in an operator form Set the unknown function u(x, y) into decomposition series

(9)

Essential Features of ADM

Substitute the series (9) into both sides of the

resulting equation Identify the zeroth component Determine the successive components of the series solution by applying recursive scheme (7)

Essential Features of ADM

ADM approaches any equation, homogeneous

or inhomogeneous, and linear or nonlinear in a straight forward manner without any need to restrictive assumptions such as linearization, discretization or perturbation

Example
Consider the following equation

(10) In an operator form Eq. (10) becomes (11) Where the differential operator L is given by (12)

Example
Therefore the inverse operator

is defined by (13)

Applying

to both sides of (11) and using initial condition we obtain (14) (15)

so that

Example
Or equivalently

(16) Substituting the series assumption (5) into both sides of (16) gives (17) (18) From (17) (19)

Example
Follows immediately, Consequently, we obtain

(20)

Exercise
Solve following differential equation using

ADM

Conclusion
If an exact solution exists for the problem,

then the obtained series converges very rapidly to the solution. For concrete problems, where a closed form solution is not obtainable, a truncated number of terms is usually used for numerical purposes.
