Importance of OH&S

Some regulations in Australia


y Employers must ensure that information, training and

instruction provided to a worker is suitable and adequate having regard to: (a) the nature of the work carried out by the worker; and (b) the nature of the risks associated with the work at the time the information, training or instruction is provided; and (c) the control measures implemented.

y The person must ensure, that the information,

training and instruction provided under this regulation is provided in a way that is readily understandable by any person to whom it is provided.

y A person conducting a business or undertaking at a

workplace must ensure, the provision of adequate facilities for workers, including toilets, drinking water, washing facilities and eating facilities.

Responsibility of the employer


y adequately monitor workers' health y keep information and records relevant to your workers'

health and safety y employ or engage people with the necessary qualifications or expertise to advise you on health and safety issues affecting your workers

Responsibility of the employee


All workers should ensure that they work

in a manner that is not harmful to their own health and that of others You must notify your employer of any injury or illness within 30 days of you becoming aware of it. If you need medical treatment or time off work because of your injury or illness, you need to make a claim.

Possible Hazards in Engineering


y Radioactive leak y High voltage electrocution y Electric fires

Hazard
Any facility, location, equipment, tool, job, task, or action that presents a potential of serious injury or death to any employee. Eg : A naked live wire that is accessible to people passing by

Risk
It is the potential of harm or loss (generally economic) and its impact to the company or individual from a potential hazard. Eg : a person runs the risk of getting electrocuted if the don t use proper insulated tools when handling live electric wiring.

Incident
It is the event where the potential risk has taken place. It is often referred to as an accident .

Eg: When a person is electrocuted by using un insulated tools to fix wiring.

Some Hazard Signs


Bio Hazard It refers to biological substances that pose a threat to the health of living organisms, primarily that of humans. This can include medical waste or samples of micro organism, virus or toxin (fr om a biological source) that can impact human health.

Radiation Hazard It signifies the presence and use of material in the designated area that emit radiations which can affect the health of humans.

Flammable LPG It signifies the presence of highly flammable LPG stored or used in the area. As such caution has to be followed when lighting a fire in the area.
