ASEAN

ESTABLISHMENT y ASEAN was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok,

Thailand.

y The founding fathers of ASEAN are Indonesia,

Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.


y Establishment is based on the Declaration of the

Association of Southeast Asian Nations i.e. Bangkok Declaration.

Mutual respect for the independence, sovereignty, equality, territorial integrity, and national identity of all nations; The right of every State to lead its national existence free from external interference, subversion. Non-interference in the internal affairs of one another;

y Renunciation of the threat or use of force; y Effective cooperation among themselves.

y The Asean Secretariat: y The ASEAN Secretariat was set up in February 1976 by the

Foreign Ministers of ASEAN.


y It is housed in Jakarta (Indonesia). y The ASEAN Secretariat s basic function is to provide for

greater efficiency in the coordination of ASEAN organs.

y It also helps in effective implementation of ASEAN projects

and activities.
y The ASEAN Secretariat s mission is to initiate, facilitate and

coordinate ASEAN stakeholder s collaboration in realizing the purposes and principles of ASEAN as reflected in the ASEAN Charter.

y The major Functions of the ASEAN are carried out by the

following three councils:


y ASEAN Political-Security Community. y ASEAN Economic Community. y ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community.

y ASEAN Political-Security Community y The APSC ensures that countries in the region live at peace

with one another and with the world in a democratic and harmonious environment.
y The members of the Community rely on peaceful processes

in the settlement of intra-regional differences and regard their security linked to one another and bound by common vision and objectives.

y ASEAN Economic Community y AEC envisages the following key characteristics:

(a) A single market and production base. (b) A highly competitive economic region. (c) A region of equitable economic development. (d) A region fully integrated into the global economy.

y ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community y The ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community aims to contribute to

realizing an ASEAN Community that is people-oriented and socially responsible


y It seeks to forge a common identity and is focused on

nurturing the human, cultural and natural resources for sustained development in a harmonious and peopleoriented ASEAN.

y Trade Between Asean Countries: y Trade among ASEAN countries has grown from US $ 44.2

billion in 1993 to US $ 154.4 billion in 2008, representing an average increase of 33.2%.


y Before the financial and economic crisis struck in mid

2008, intra-ASEAN exports had been increasing by 29.6%.

y But the advent of the financial and economic crisis has

adversely affected intra-regional trade more than trade with the rest of the world.
y Intra-ASEAN trade contracted by 15.9% in 2008 compared

to the 5.8% reduction in total ASEAN exports.
