INTRODUCTION
A BMI is a direct communication pathway between a brain and an external device. BMI uses brain activity to command, control, actuate and communicate with the world directly through brain integration with peripheral devices & system. BMIs are often aimed at augmenting or repairing human cognitive or sensory motor function. The operation of this machine based on his or her EEG response . It is also known as BCI or direct neural interface.

machine. These are electronic interfaces with the brain, which has ability to send and receive signals from brain. By using BMI artificial electrical signal can stimulate the brain tissue in order to transmit some information. Eg: Somebody with spinal injuries will be able to use their brain to control a prosthetic limb

BMI APPROACHES
There are basically two different approaches:
Pattern Recognition Approach based on cognitive mental tasks. Operant Conditioning Approach based on the self-regulation of the EEG response.

BCI APPLICATIONS
The BMI technologies can be broken into three major areas:1. 1.Auditory and visual prosthesis - Cochlear implants - Brainstem implants - Synthetic vision - Artificial silicon retina 2. Functional-neuromuscular stimulation (FNS) - FNS systems are in experimental use in cases where spinal cord damage or a stroke has severed the link between brain and the peripheral nervous system. They can use brain to control their own limbs by this system 3. Prosthetic limb control - Thought controlled motorized wheel chair. ADVANTAGES OF BCI
BCIs will help creating a direct communication pathway between a human or animal brain and an external device like computer. It has increased the possibility of treatment of disabilities related to nervous system along with old technique of neuroprosthetics. Techniques like EEG, MEG and neurochips have come into discussions since BCI applications have started developing. This has provided a new work area for the scientists and researchers around the world.

DISADVANTAGES OF BCI
In case of invasive BCI there is a risk of formation of scar tissue. There is a need of extensive training before user cau use techniques like EEG. BCI techniques still require much enhancement before they can be used by users as they are slow. BCI techniques are costly. It requires lot of money to set up BCI environment.

CHALLENGES
Connecting to the nervous system could lead to permanent brain damage, resulting in the loss of feelings or movement, or continual pain. In the networked brain condition what will mean to be human? Virus attacks may occur to brain causing ill effects.

FUTURE EXPANSION
A new thought-communication device might soon help severely disabled people get their independence by allowing them to steer a wheelchair with their mind. Linking people via chip implants to super intelligent machines seems to a natural progression creating in effect, super humans.

CONCLUSION
Brain Machine Interface is a method of communication based on voluntary neural activity generated by the brain and independent of its normal output pathways. The neural activity used in BCI can be recorded using invasive and non-invasive techniques. We can say as detection techniques and experimental designs improve, the BCI will improve as well and would provide health alternatives to people to interact with environment.
