Active compounds
Eugenol comprises 72-90% of the essential oil extracted from cloves, and is the compound most responsible for the cloves' aroma .

Other important essential oil constituents of clove oil include acetyl eugenol and vanillin tannins, gallotannic acid, methyl salicylate (painkiller); the flavonoids eugenin, kaempferol and eugenitin; triterpenoidslike oleanolic acid, stigmasterol and campesterol; and several sesquiterpenes.[

Medicinal uses

antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic properties. The characteristic smell of clove oil helps in removing bad breath. Clove is also effective against cavities. Clove oil is helpful in case of nausea and vomiting and is often used for pregnancy related vomiting.

Cautions
Always test a small amount of essential oil first for sensitivity or allergic reaction. Irritating to the skin, dilute before topical use. Clove oil can be sensitizing (repeated use on the same area increases irritation). Can act as a blood thinner.
