Supporting Cultural Heritage in Jambi

This power point documents a recent visit organized by the Jambi Arts Council for myself and Dr. Fiona Kerlogue from the Horniman Museum in England. We visited the Jambi National Museum and the History Museum, met with Government of Indonesian personnel from all relevant departments and visited the archaeological site of Mauro Jambi. The purpose was to examine the various challenges which exist for a cultural revival in Jambi involving museums and museum education programs in particular as well as studying the progress of the bid for UNESCO heritage status for the site. We concluded that urgent local, national and international intervention is required to stop the continuing destruction of the site by the coal and palm oil industry.

All Indonesians visit their museums when young but rarely ever return after high school. The challenge is to improve museum education programs, extend them to the universities and engage the general public.

The Modern History Museum

This museum has an extremely active and successful education program as well as self-motivated visitors in high school and university

Muara Jambi, Capital of Sriwijaya: The Bid for UNESCO World Heritage Status
Muara Jambi is a site of exceptional importance for world history in general, south east Asian Buddhist history and Indonesian heritage specifically. The archaeological research on the site has barely begun and presents an extraordinary case for the revelation of a history well known in Tibet but not in Indonesia nor in academia. If the Government of Indonesia can protect the site, halt its destruction and enhance funding to its restoration and development through the various ministries perhaps the bid for UNESCO World Heritage Status might one day be achieved.
