What is Fire Compartmentation?

Most effective means of limiting size of fire. Confine a fire and minimize risk of loss of occupants by segregating a space to control the spread the fire.

Traditional Tools of Compartmentation:

Fire Doors Masonry Walls Fire Rated Glass Partition Fire Resistance Walls

New Compartmentation Trends:

Fire/Smoke Curtains

Fire Curtain is an Automatic Fire Barrier which comprises of fire resistant fabric fixed to a steel roller which is driven by an internal tubular electric motor. The roller is mounted and enclosed in a steel housing and the bottom edge of the curtain has a weighted bar.

How Does Fire Curtains Operate?

Under normal conditions, the motor fitted internally in the roller, is being locked maintaining the barrier in retracted position. In the event of fire, a signal from detector across the volt free contacts & make them open which results in deployment of the barrier. There are options of detecting obstacle in the way of barrier as well as delayed deployment & even emergency retract facility (to evacuate people).

Flawless Containment of Smoke

Fire/Smoke Curtain offers smoke containment as well, by deploying at required heights. Overlapping barriers and conjoining bottom bars reduces the problems of deflection and leakage. This results in high level of Containment Efficiency.

National Building Code - Part 4

The references to Fire and Smoke compartmentation is clearly shown in NBC under below heading:Clause - 3.4.8 & 3.4.9 - which mentions the use of fire rated assemblies. Clause - 6.3.3.1 - mentions the smoke barriers for over to 80 sqmt in case of hospitals. Clause 6.3.3.5 & 6.3.3.6 - mentions any area exceeding 500 m2 shall be divided into compartments by fire resistant wall. Doors in fire resistant walls shall be so installed that these may normally be kept in open position, but will close automatically. 1,125 m2 for upper stories. 500 m2 + 1.5 with sprinklers = 750 m2 for Basements and Healthcare. Clause C.1.8 - mentions all floors shall be compartmented by a separation wall with 2 hr rating. Clause C.9 - mentions the building shall be suitably compartmentalized so that fire/smoke remain confined to the area where fire incident has occurred & does not spread to the remaining part of the building.

Benefits Of Fire/Smoke Curtains

Gravity Fail Safe
Coopers Curtains operate on POWER on BREAK on System BS EN 12101-1:2006 The barrier should be designed to return to a safe condition in the event of a failure or malfunction etc. Where this is for Life Safety it should Fail-Safe by Gravity

What Is Gravity Fail Safe?

Any Fire/Smoke Barrier reaches in its fire operational position when all consumable primary & auxiliary power sources are removed or in the event of wiring or system corruption or any combination thereof.
Mains Control Equipment Motor
