SharePoint is a Microsoft Office collaboration tool. It allows teams to share information anywhere there is a web browser available. Everything is on the website.
A SharePoint website provides a central storage (cloud-based) space for documents, information, and ideas. It helps groups of people share information and work together. For example, a SharePoint site can help you: Coordinate projects, calendars, and schedules. Discuss ideas and review documents or proposals. Share information and keep in touch with other people. Access, or update information quickly

A SharePoint based team site can be a means to achieving this. Executive support of the implementation of a team site is crucial to its success.
