Overview
Microsoft SharePoint 2010 offers many improvements over Microsoft Office Server 2007. These new and enhanced features can be implemented to improve user adoption, collaboration, and increase administrative efficiency. The following highlights the enhancements and additions made to Microsoft SharePoint 2010 since Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. This is not a complete listing, but it instead provides information on those new features and enhancements which will be beneficial to Manheim.
Document Management
Document Sets Provides users the ability of managing a group of documents as a single item within a library. Enterprise Content Types Content types which are published from a central Site Content Type gallery (the Content Type Hub) to other content type galleries; allowing content types to remain consistent across the enterprise Document IDs A unique, Site Collection level ID which follows the document (or Document Set) and provides a single URL for referencing the document; regardless of location. Content Organizer Replacing the Records Center routing rules and now available to all document libraries, the Content Organizer enables basic management as well as the automatic routing of documents to different libraries and folders within those libraries. Maximum Item Count Folders within a Document Library can now hold up to 5000 items. The maximum number of items in any list (including a Document Library) is 50,000,000.
Document IDs
Document IDs are sequential integers within a list or library. Available only in Records Center. Available at Site Collection level only. Could not easily share content types across farms or Site Collections.
Content By Query Web Part Now provides support for rich media

Calendar
Calendars from Exchange and SharePoint 2010 can be blended. Events from multiple calendars can be opened into a single calendar view (works across site collections).

Event adding
Visio Services
View Visio files within the browser via the Visio Web Access Web Part. Get live updates for data-connected Visio diagrams. Interactivity between the Visio Web Access Web Part and another web part on the page without code. Visio Services API enables the creation of mash-ups of diagrams and additional data.
Excel Services
Unattended Service Account A low privilege unattended service account for customers to use as a single get data type of account. Trusted Locations Trusted locations are now provided by default. Multi-user Collaboration Multi-user collaborative environment provides multiple users with the ability to edit any workbook simultaneously. Delegate Services Permissions SharePoint Server contains a new shared service infrastructure that allows the central administrator to delegate permissions to manage other services to users. Slicer feature Filter which allows for the use of OLAP functions and Pivot Tables, and the creation of interactive reports within a SharePoint environment. New Excel Services custom applications Custom applications are created with user-defined functions (UDFs) and these functions remain available for Excel Services.
SP 2010 Improvements Can edit any out of the box SharePoint form (edit, new, display)
InfoPath Form Web Part allows web part pages to load and run InfoPath forms . InfoPath forms can connect to other web parts on a page to retrieve data. They can also retrieve data from a query string.

The BDC is renamed to Business Connectivity Services (BCS) and now includes the following features: SharePoint Designer Create external connections from within SharePoint Designer 2010. Write-Back to external Systems BCS provides full CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) and Query support to external systems. Familiar UI External content types provide SharePoint and MS Office type behaviors and capabilities to external data and services. Sort, Group, and Filter functions are available from within SharePoint. Offline Access Business Connectivity Services provides rich cache and offline work features, and supports cache-based operations. Connectivity Options and Extensible Provider Model Provides connectivity support to:
Databases Web/WFC Services Microsoft .NET Framework connectivity assemblies Custom Data sources Pluggable Framework Developers can plug in connectors for new external system types allowing access to the new data source types.
Workflow
New types of declarative workflows available in SharePoint Designer 2010:
Reusable Workflow can be associated to any list and can be saved as a template. Site Workflows useable anywhere within a site and not associated with a specific List or Content Type
Workflows can be built in Visio (using SharePoint Workflow Template) and imported into SharePoint Designer. SharePoint Designer workflows can be exported to a Visio diagram. Out-of-the-box workflows can be edited. Many new workflow conditions and actions. Workflows can run under the permissions of a specific account instead of the logged on user.

Site Workflows

Archival Storage
Sites can be backed up from Central administration.
Sub sites and individual list items can be backed up. List/Item security can be exported. Item versions can be exported.
Unattached Database Restore - Load a content database into SQL and SharePoint will be able to restore a site, sub site, or list; and restore individual content into another site collection.
SharePoint Designer
Support for portable workflows A new editor has been provided for creating workflows. Workflows can be exported to Visio diagrams. Visio Diagrams can be imported as workflows (if built using SharePoint Workflow Template). Fully integrated with the BCS. New user interface makes it easier to manage and browse sites, sub sites, lists, and libraries.
Historical reports can be viewed as far back as 365 days. Reports can be customized/filtered via Excel Services and exported to Excel. Report generation scheduling and alerts. New web parts leverage the generated reports to display popular content and search queries/results. Reporting available from Web Application level down to Site level. Statistics are stored in a separate Usage DB which will allow customized queries against it. 3rd party applications can write their data to the Usage DB. Feature usage and licensing information can be tracked to help ensure compliance.
Social Networking
Managed Taxonomies Defined in the Term Store Management Tool, administrators can now create a centralized list of terms used for tagging throughout the farm. Groupings and Sets are supported so permissions restrictions can be applied as needed. Folksonomies Enabled as a list option, this allows user-submitted tags to be used for tagging in addition to any terms in a managed taxonomy. User Profile Service Stores information about users in a central location which can be consumed across multiple sites and farms. Expertise Finding Used with People Search and expertise tagging to locate people within an organization who have identified themselves has being a subject matter expert. It allows users to find other users based on expertise and organizational role. My Site The My Site functionality has been streamlined to allow for quick access to a users content, profile and social networking while maintaining user customizability. Will also be able to use photos from a central repository, and includes a Facebook-like status. My Network A new page within a users My Site which allows suers to track people and terms theyre interested in.
Ratings Users can rate any items within a document library where the Ratings feature has been activated. Social Tagging Leveraging MySites, this allows nearly any element to be tagged; including sites, pages, documents, digital media, and blog posts. Navigating tag clouds and lists of tags in supported out-of-the-box via the Tag Cloud Web Part. Bookmarks Users can bookmark external pages using the Tags and Noteboard function which tags those links within SharePoint and makes them available for future use. Note Board Users can leave short notes on any SharePoint Server page. Wikis Built on top of the Publishing infrastructure of SharePoint which allows any publishing features to be included in a wiki site. Wiki is itself a feature, and activating the feature turns a site into a Wiki. It also integrates with SharePoint Designer, and now supports page layouts and document uploading. Blogs Users can upload images from a local computer or network without leaving the page. Entries can be browsed by month as well as categories. The new rich text editor makes authoring a blog post more like working within Word. Document Co-authoring Users can edit the same Word or PowerPoint presentation at the same time
SP 2010 Improvements Users have the ability to tag nearly any element within SharePoint with a keyword for easy reference or tracking. External sites can be tagged as well.
