Ang Pinagbagong Buo at Ganap na Pagpapahayag ng Mabuting Balita: Para sa Pagbabago ng Simbahan

Renewal and Reform for a More Effective Evangelization

Foundations of the New Evangelization were laid down

in the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Nuntiandi (Evangelization in the Modern World) of Pope Paul VI New Evangelization was Pope Paul VIs response to the new challenges that the contemporary world creates for the mission of the Church (according to JPII) The Church is an evangelizer, but she begins by being evangelized herself she has a constant need of being evangelized, if she wishes to retain freshness, vigor, and strength in order to proclaim the Gospel (EN,15). The Church is both the object and subject of evangelization

The New Evangelization

a technical term used by John Paul II

in his encyclical Redemptororis Missio, 1992 needed in our day in order to revitalize the faith, give a new dynamism to the building up of the Church, to draw people to unity does not mean a new message; there is always the basic Christian message: salvation through Jesus Christ Evangelization can be new in its ardor, methods and expression (John Paul II) The new evangelization is not a matter of merely passing on doctrine but rather of a personal and profound meeting with the Savior (John Paul II).

The Three Stages/Phases of Evangelization

John Paul II in his encyclical on evangelization,

Redemptoris Missio, stresses the continuing process about evangelization with 3 stages or phases 1st Phase: Missio Ad Gentes The missionary activity of the Church in relation to those who have not heard of Christ; directed to the non-Christians who do not yet believe in Christ 2nd Phase: Pastoral Care of Young Christian Community the communities who have received the proclamation of the Good News 3rd Phase: New Evangelization/Re-evangelization addressed to non-practicing Christians and to entire cultures; specifically directed to establish Churches whose practices of faith have veered away from the Gospel

PJPIIs urgent call to a new evangelization is imperative.

The moment has come to commit all of the Churchs

energies to a new evangelization and the mission ad gentes. No believer in Christ, no institution of the Church can avoid this supreme duty: to proclaim Christ to all peoples (RM,3). Missionary activity/evangelization is for all Missionary activity renews the Church, revitalizes faith and Christian identity. Faith is strengthened when it is given to others.

PJPII states that missionary evangelization is the responsibility and calling of all Christians.
I spoke explicitly of the Churchs permanent mission of

bringing the gospel to the multitudes who as yet do not know Christ and the responsibility of the lay faithful in this regard. The mission ad gentes is incumbent upon the entire People of God missionary activity which is carried out in a wide variety of ways, is the task of all the Christian faithful.

PJPII explains the significant role of the laity

The sphere in which lay people are present and active as

missionaries is very extensive. Their own field is the vast and complilcated word of politics, society and economics on the local, national and international levels

The challenge now is:

How can young people evangelize or re-evangelize the world they live in?

In response to the call for a New Evangelization/ Re-evangelization, the Church in the Philippines, through the CBCP convened the Second Plenary Council of the Philippines (PCPII) on Jan 20 Feb 17, 1991

The triple thrust of PCP II:

1. To be a Community of Disciples, whose faith in Christ is expressed in the mission 2. To be a Church of the Poor 3. To commit to the mission of renewed integral evangelization

It involves defending human rights specially the poor and the oppressed, and changing oppressive structures through non-violent action The Synod of Bishops stated that action for justice and transformation of society are constitutive elements of evangelization today.

EDSA I People Power a good reminder for the Filipino people on what the Church says, Action for justice and transformation of society are constitutive elements of New Evangelization, that faith requires promotion of justice.

Renewed and Integral Evangelization

a new paradigm on evangelization in the

Church of the Philippines inspired by the Second Vatican Councils vision of the Church and its call for renewal Vatican Council II was convoked by Pope XXII started in October 11, 1962 and ended in December 8, 1965 Aggiornamaneto Italian word for updating and renewal renewal of the Churchs original inspiration; for the reforms structure, and updating of methods in ministries, all for a more effective proclamation of the Gospel

Different form of witnessing and service that emerge to respond to those changes and to meet the needs of the present time:
Inculturation Inter-religious dialogue Integral human development

A mission of service necessarily includes all of these

Our vision of the Church as communion, participation and mission, about the Church as priestly, prophetic and kingly people, and a Church of the poor, that is a renewed Church, is today finding expression in one ecclesial movement, that is the movement to foster Basic Ecclesial Communities (PCP II 137). They are small communities of Christians, usually of families, who gather around the Word of God and the Eucharist. These communities are united to their pastors but are ministered to regularly by lay leaders. The members know each other by name and share not only the Word of God and the Eucharist but also their concerns both material and spiritual. They have a strong sense of belongingness and of responsibility for one another. (PCP II 138) Usually emerging at the grassroots among poor farmers and workers, Basic Ecclesial Communities consciously strive to integrate their faith and their daily life. They are guided and encouraged by regular catechesis. Poverty and their faith urge their members towards solidarity with one another, action for justice, and towards a vibrant celebration of life in the liturgy. (PCP II 139). Basic Ecclesial Communities under various names and forms BCCs, small Christian communities, covenant communities must be vigorously promoted for the full living of the Christian vocation in both urban and rural areas. (PCP II decrees, article 109)

Mission Gives Rise to the Different Ministries in the Local Church

Many of our parishes ministries are categorized within the

framework of WESTY Fam

Many dioceses now have shifted from WESTYFam structure

to a sectorilization of ministries, moving from being evangelized to becoming evangelizers.
