INTRODUCTION

What is a robotics?
Mankind has always strived to give life like qualities to its artifacts in an

attempt to find the substitutes for himself to carryout his orders and also to work in a hostile environment
The popular concept of a robot is a machine that looks and walks like a

human being but industrial robots of today not look the least bit like a human being.
The robot technology is advancing rapidly. There are many applications

of robotics such as space applications, industrial applications etc. The name robot was first coined by karel capek.

Past Embodiments of Robotics

The oldest form of the technology was represented by

automata and its first sophisticated description was given by Leonardo da Vinci, approximately 500 years ago.
Jacobson of the University of Utah (see Fig.1c) [6].

This system has a very large number of Degrees-ofFreedom (DOF) driven by a fixed digital memory (usually on a repeating tape).

APPLICATIONS FOR INDUSTRIAL ROBOTS

There are many applications of robots. Force amplification for the human making the

combination capable of picking up ten times the load possible by the man alone. The hand prototype by G. Hirzinger involves 12 DOF, 28 sensors, a unique embedded actuatomodule, and an on-board electronic controller. One of the most common applications is spot welding. Today, the field of robotics is moving rapidly to a blending of these fields into a new discipline.

FUTURE OF INDUSTRAIL ROBOTS

The robot industry (and most machines in general) has

concentrated on a monolithic design of manipulators (4 to 7 DOF arms) which are one-off designs in much the same way we built and operated our earliest computers. A massive lesson from computers has been learned from the last two decades on the commercial development of an open architecture for the hardware system (Dell Computers) and a generalized software for the operating system (Microsoft). The widespread awareness of this standardization encourages investment to organically occur from a variety of sources.

CONCLUSION
Robot is a technology for the future and with the

future. The robots will be human friendly intelligent, capable of responding to voice commands and will be easy to program. First, more people in industry are becoming aware of the technology and aware of its potential for useful applications Future robots may find applications outside of the factory in banks restaurants, and even homes
